Art beyond the Studio: Land and Environmental Art
2008
(Exert)
'Deliverence from the confines of the studio frees the artist to a degree from the snares of craft and the bondage of creativity' (Smithson 1968, p. 880).
The artist's studio is a place designed for studious creativity but there is much more beyond this. In this dissertation I consider: 1. Whether or not Land and Environmental Art are on the increase with climate change becoming more popularly understood through the media; 2. The movement from the studio to Land and Environmental Art; 3. The connections to different ethical frameworks; 4. The work of Richard Long and Hamish Fulton; 5. The cross over between environmental activist and Land or Environmental artist; and 6. Finally reflect on my own ideas upon the subject and the future of the studio.'
