Introduction

The G3XBM Shack

Thank you for visiting this site. Most of the content is amateur radio related, but there are also pages about a number of other things including optical mirages and our family history back to 1428 in Devon. I hope you enjoy the mixture.

My main interest at the moment is WSPR mode beaconing especially on 137kHz and 500kHz. WSPR is an ideal mode for experimenting with homebrew equipment and propagation. Another area of interest is amateur radio below 9kHz, where some recent tests in Germany have pushed the DX achieved to 2873kms. My own interest in this part of the spectrum is so-called "earth mode" (through the ground) communications by conduction using weak signal reception techniques where my best DX with 5W is 6km. Also, I enjoy listening for VLF natural radio emissions. I'm also building simple gear for 137kHz where the best DX with QRSS30 beaconing is 328km with true QRP to a simple antenna.

Other interests include (a) very simple ham radio construction (what you can make for next to nothing) and (b
) QRP operating, especially on 6m and 10m. Every few months I find a new project to get me busy and these are shown here as they progress. Nothing I do is complicated. Feel free to use any designs shown here, but be prepared to optimise them yourself as my designs are never finished!

A new interest, just started, is optical communications using red LEDs at 481THz.

If you have suggestions for new content or comments on the site then do put something in the guestbook or send me an e-mail.

The G3XBM blog pages are updated every few days with items of news about my building projects, QRP or other items of general interest to radio amateurs.
