Why and When I Became a Border Collie Rescuer and opened up our home for Border Collies in need. In the year 2000 our pack moved from Europe to the United States. After having volunteered in animal shelters for many years Europe, I was shocked to see how many wonderful dogs, pure breds and mixes were in kennels, sometimes with 3 or 4 other dogs, sometimes in good condition and sometimes so horrible, scared and traumatized, waiting to be adopted or to be euthanized or worsted sold to laboratories and schools to be used a test animal. Being Border Collie lovers, active in herding and other activities, we decided right away that we should help find these wonderful super intelligent creatures a new leash on life. That’s when I became a Independent Border Collie rescuer. In the year 2000 BC Rescue in No-California wasn't as large and organized as it is today, so I became an independent rescuer and still am, paying every penny out of my own pocket, vaccinations, medical care, spay-neuter and food and toys. A part will be covered by the adoption fee but never all of it. Spay and neuter alone will almost be as much as the adoption fee, many people don't realize this and I often need to explain. Over the years a lot of dogs have stayed for a while at our home, some longer than others. All have found loving new owners and all have a special job to do. At this moment we are located in the beautiful Pacific NorthWest in Northern Oregon and hope to stay here for a while but who knows where the road we travel might bring us in the future. Unfortunately our resident Bitch with the capital B, my heart and soul dog, Gwen, died in May 2008 due to Lymphoma she was 11 years old. I still miss her every day more than ever but I carry on for her. If you want to have a peek at Gwen's website click this link: Gwen van den Schaepenhoeve We rescue and rehabilitate one dog at the time, I need to be able to give that special dog my full attention and care before it can move on to his forever home. A exception is made for puppies, pups do better in a pack environment, they learn a lot from each other. Our pack consists out:
