Some may find statistics interesting. There are many perspectives and I've found something interesting at least from the perspective of Browser usage. You see, I am a huge admirer of Google for what they've done for the public domain. The more internet based products they create and make free to use, the more statistics they are able to gleen from their usage. Some of you may not know it but a couple recent products have been the release of the Google operating system for cell phone use as well as a new internet browser called Chrome.

Towards the last part of February, this blog was added to the list of projects to track. Today for the first time we took a look at some of those stats to find that Chrome users are visiting here more than those with IE, or even Firefox.

One way that we let people know that new content is available is through Facebook (under 750 friends following) and Twitter (under 50 followers). Still the stat is impressive showing a perspective of this kind.

The information above shows that 48% of all visitors in the last 1 1/2 weeks of February are using Chrome. And repeat readers constitute 9% using IE and 73% using Chrome.

Another interesting note is that 72% of you have the speed of a cable connection. Perhaps since we utilize a lot of videos in our articles and rants, that most of you that come here have to have a faster connection speed such as cable. Less than 2% of you have a business rated connection speed like OC3.

A few months ago we put together an article on the new Chrome browser. While its only been out for a few months, its easy to get hooked on its functionality. You can find out why you too may want to get your own Chrome browser running on your PC. View several Chrome videos here. Then download it if it agrees with you. With Microsoft's IE having frequent and often severe security flaws being found in it, perhaps you should be using Firefox or Chrome too!!

The article on coffee, "2nd Most Legally Traded Commodity in the World" brought us a new discovery full of great information on the topic...Sweet Maria's Coffee. Home roasting also caught some eyes and we've already got some comments about it. It brought one or two of us back a few years, our trips Jamaica and Guatemala. Two countries with very unique coffee nuances depending on what you are looking for in a great tasting cup.

Just reading the article and watching the videos, has had me drinking more of the earthy nectar these last couple days. And if it keeps me from loosing it in my old age, then I say Brew Me Another Cup!

We love to hear from you all!

Jan 30, Friday

Fridays are good days to be out of the market by noon. At least that is how I go about it. There seem to be any number of reasons. A couple of them are:
  1. Profit taking just before the weekend
  2. Uncertainty
And the one reason I like is: I have learned to mimic my European counterparts who stop answering phones at mid day, and have the car packed and ready to head out to meet friends by 2pm.

If you are looking for some good films to watch at home or while shacked up in the mountains this weekend, I have a few:

How She Move
The story of a girl who's older sister just died and she is forced to leave private school because her parents money had run out. She goes back to the old neighborhood and to her old school. Her sights are set on medical school; problem is, how to get the money or scholarship she needs to attend. Not a blockbuster but a solid little movie with some good steppin or step-dancing to hold it all together. Step-dancing is a form of percussive dancing where by the entire body is used like an instrument and the dance team become one in their moves. African in origin but African-American in its current form, this dance can go from the simple to the extreme with flash or risky stunts.

Fingersmith
Written in a classic english style and adapted to the big screen. A small girl named Maude is plucked from an orphanage to become the secretary of her uncle. He is so dry and cold, it is the only thing she knows and she too grows up like him. Back in the slums where she was cared for as a baby, Mrs. S who gets paid to care for unwanted children, plots to make some big money. Sending an orphan she raised into an adult; Sarah, is brought into the plot to work as Maude's personal servant. In one month's time, she is supposed to gain Maude's trust and talk her into marrying a fraud of a man who will then take her inheritance. Sarah and Maude bond into a friendship but horrible things happen to both them before it can go much further. The story is that of a crime drama or psycho crime drama. One of the actors calls it a thriller.

Crashing
This movie is like the probable fantasy of a blocked male writer. A best selling author finds himself kicked out of the house just before he has to appear in front of a college literary class. With no place to go, he accepts an invitation by two of the students (Izabella Miko of -Save the Last Dance 2, House of Usher and Lizzy Caplan of the -WB series: Related). He agrees to take them up on their offer if he can provide something for them. They agree to have him critique their writing. Crashing on the couch provides him new material for his next novel. Both girls inspire him to overcome his writers block. Fantasy sequences are part of the story and are shown in an easily watchable way.

Jan 25, Sunday

It was a brutal week as you know. And this week may not be much better. So, its time for a breather and to not think about the market for a few hours at least.

Something that caught my eye and made me smile and laugh, was this video!

Continuing in entertainment we turn to the Oscars.
All the rage was a new movie, a not so Hollywood but rather a Bollywood film. SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE
'Slumdog Millionaire' was all set to go straight to DVD after the film's original studio backer, Warner Independent (a division of Warner Brothers),
closed down in May 2008. Luckily, the Fox studio's indie film division, Fox Searchlight, picked it up for theatrical release. The three youngest child leads, who were all cast from the Mumbai slums, are now having their schooling funded by the film's producers. With the promise of a trust fund should they pass their exams at 16.

Anil Kapoor, who plays Prem Kumar, the host of 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire?' in 'Slumdog', donated his fee to Plan India, a child development NGO in Delhi, devoted to raising awareness about child abuse, trafficking, education and rehabilitating deprived children.

Kapoor has starred in almost 100 Bollywood films. The real Indian version of the gameshow, 'Kaun Banega Crorepati', has been presented by two of his fellow Bollywood superstars, Amitabh Bachchan (who also features in 'Slumdog' as young Jamal's celebrity obsession) and Shahrukh Khan. Khan turned down the role of Prem in 'Slumdog' after deciding that the character was too negative. Khan will now be regretting his decision obviously. You will definitely want to see this film even if you've never seen an Indian movie, this will convince you of how cool they are. If only Hollywood would produce more films like this, there would be more entertainment for us to see. Until then, I will continue to play catch-up, by renting all the Bollywood films that I can. The neat thing is, there's barely a lemon in the whole humungus bunch. Indian's who have been the primary beneficiaries of these films are much, much more critical (which shows you just how bad most of our Hollywood stories are).

Oh, and why can't the film industry make movie-going more affordable to everyone like they do in India? All this complaining about internet downloads, DVDs, and the decreasing number of cinema go-ers. What was the word from one of the recent articles here? HOGWASH! Once again, the United States looses out because of too much focus on profit in the short-term. Isn't that what it all comes down to?

No matter how much I search, I can not seem to find a preview that captures the true essence of this film. So you must go see it! If you do, maybe Hollywood will recognize that it should at least produce more films from India or perhaps mix India/UK/America like has been done in only a few predominately Indian films. We here in America need this kind of film because it gives us hope. This is why India produces some 1,000 films per year! And they appeal to almost every Indian no matter rich or poor.

Slumdog Millionaire won Golden Globe Awards for:

  • BEST MOTION PICTURE / DRAMA
  • BEST SCREENPLAY
  • BEST ORIGINAL SCORE

Jan 21, Tuesday

Yesterday was an historic day in more ways than one. The obvious one, the inauguration of the United States' first black president. The first U.S. President from Hawaii, the first to have worked at Baskin Robins. The second was the 332 point down day for the Dow Jones Index. While history shows that just over 70% of inauguration days are down, this was a history-making down.

We had hoped that with the recession, the past eight years, the loss of jobs, the credit crisis, and all the rest, that the inauguration of this new President would, at least give us a slightly up day, if not flat day. Following several days down, it was a good bet that we'd get that. But we didn't get a positive. Today however is different. Today is the day we expected for Tuesday. But we'll take all the positive we can get.

The Bears have control however as the Bullish Percent Indicator charts show. There may be some short term rallies, but overall, it may continue to trend down.

We like to say that we're pessimistic optimists. With recession finally admitted, George W. out of the picture, and Obama in, we can now look forward with a bit more optimism. Onwards and upwards!

Jan 14, Wednesday

Sometimes I can't sleep at night. There are various reasons, such as thoughts of what news will drive the overall market up or down. Or because there is so much material to read and never enough time to read it. Sometimes I'm just caught up in an article, whether it be a re-posted one that has to be edited, embellished with video, pictures, tables, etc..  one that someone in the group submits, or perhaps one of my own that keeps expanding on topic.

Sometimes too, I am busy till the wee hours consulting with someone about a boyfriend or husband. I've been a relationship counselor for years, sort of under the radar, not wanting to be known. But people find me because of referrals; other times I just want to help. People are so interesting to me. Why they do what they do and say what they say. I find similarities in the stock market though in the last couple of years it has been so overtly dishonest and manipulated. But then again, maybe both are more alike then I first realized.

Its 3:52am and I better get some shut-eye!

Jan 13, Tuesday
Since early summer of 2008, our team has been extremely prolific at posting articles up on .  The site started by Steve Schwartz had all the things that we were looking for to create content. Video, Photos, Streaming News, Podcasts, Educational options, and lots more. We created as well as re-posted articles that we felt were very important in the social landscape of our investing in the stock market.

Since early fall of 2008 however, it was clear that much was lacking in the upkeep of the hardware as well as ongoing maintenance and development. To that end, Mr. Schwartz had long since begun looking for alternatives with both partners and those in my group who are avid quality consultants. We always intended to help our host with constructive suggestions for improvement. Steve found some new partners finally and it looks like we'll be actively posting again on a whole new site in the next 30 to 45 days. The new site will be called "The Market Discovery Network" a hub of investment sites that will have all our needs and more, so that we can continue publishing critical insight to the markets which we feel affects us most.

Until then, we've all but ceased publishing on MarketEDU and will be working with the new team to get The Market Discovery Network ready for the public sometime in late February to early March, barring any complications.
