In-Home Training

My In-Home dog training service is tailored to each dog and owner's training priorities.   I do not have a set group of
commands that a re required training for every dog, and for each dog different commands or behavior problems will have priority.  I will let you know what commands you will need to work on to reach your goals.

Most basic obedience commands can be taught to your dog in 2-3 sessions and then proofed over another 2-3 sessions to off leash, reliable work when I am doing the training directly.   If you prefer to be instructed and to train your dog yourself, the estimated time will vary based on your personal dog training skills.  A combination of me working with your dog and you following up between sessions normally is the most effective.  An hour training session with a beginner dog can normally include 3-6 commands at a time.  Sessions are normally spaced 2-7 days apart to take advantage of latent learning, or every 1-3 weeks if owners practice with their dogs between visits.  Every dog learns at a different pace and has different sticking points when learning an exercise.  Packages of 5 or 10 sessions are available at a reduced rate.

Puppy Starter visits cover the issues that you are having with your puppy at that time, was well as preparing you and your puppy for the best future together.  There is a lot of conflicting advice out there and while all of it is probably right for at least one dog, an expert can help you with deciding what is best for your particular puppy and situation.

While most people find it interesting to observe the training, it is not necessary for you to be present when I am having a training session with your dog if I am doing the training primarily.  If you are at work or out of town I can also potty walk and feed while I am there.  After a command is to the proofing stage, I will need you to be present so that I can instruct you on how to handle your dog on the newly trained commands.  Some dogs generalize easily to new places and handlers and others take a lot of work to become reliable in all situations.  For some issues such as jumping on people, door bolting, and not coming when called, you will be given instructions that you will need to follow so that you don't inadvertently undo the training I am trying to accomplish while it is still in the learning phases (or the dog will learn only to not do the things when I am present and to act the same as always around you).  I will always give you a summary of the training session, what was covered, what your dog did well at, needs work on, etc.

Since I primarily use praise, play, food rewards, your pet thinks the training is fun!  Dogs are more intelligent then we give them credit for most of the time and really enjoy mentally stimulating activities.  After basic obedience training is complete, or if you already have a well-mannered pet there are many fun options to explore including Tricks & Games and Dog Sports.  A dog that is obedience trained and knows several tricks, games, or sports makes an excellent companion.
