Furry Friend's dogs

At Furry Friends we take in cats and dogs. This wasn't the plan when we first opened, but I find it hard to turn away any animal in need, so now we take in emergency dogs and quite a few unwanted cats.

This page is dedicated to my own dogs. My pride and joy!

(Please note...These dogs are NOT for rehoming!!!)

Emma's dogs

Harry

This is Harry who came to us as a 12 week old puppy.
He is a blue roan Cocker Spaniel and was diagnosed with Bronchitus at 11 years old. There is no complete cure for this, just medication when a chest problem arises.

Annie

Annie is a Yorkie x Cairn Terrier.
She came to us as a 12 week old puppy.
Annie is now 17 years old.
She is the 'old lady' of the family in the fact that she is a bit of a misery guts! Very intolerant of 'young pups' around her and will just lay there growling at them. However she doesn't back any of her outbursts up and just wanders off growling away to herself!

She was originally my mums dog, but now looks to me as her owner as she gets treated the same as my own dogs and gets her walks, dinner and treats at the same time.

She is sweet in her own way and everyone - humans and animals alike - have got used to her grumpy ways!

Monty

Monty is the clown of the family.
He came to us as a 12 week old puppy.
He is a Chihuahua cross Jack Russell and has a degenerative eye condition which is common in Chihuahua's which means eye medication for life.

Tommy

Tommy is a Pomeranian who was at the pound in Ireland due to be put to sleep. Tommy has severely deformed back legs and the pound thought no one would want him. We offered Tommy a space here and he stayed! His teeth were rotten and he had to have 7 removed, he had ear mites and he had to be shaved as he had never been brushed and his coat was completely matted.

He is now much happier and enjoying life.

Think Tommy's cute? He has his own fan page here.

Nacho

Nacho came into rescue when he was being left all day and messed in the house. He ended up in a pound and was due to be euthanased.
When Nacho and Tommy met, they became best friends so he stayed.

Emma's tribute to her parted dogs
Sadly, these dogs have left me now. They will stay forever in my heart.

Sindy

Sindy was about 18 years old when she died and this was her 10th home.
She used to belong to someone who thought it a good idea to put her in a cupboard...because her black hair went on the beige carpet!
This became forever home and she settled well.
She loved her walks...especially rolling in fox poo!!!

She was a Cocker Spaniel x Dachshund - She died from kidney failure three days after Josie. Adopted in her later years, I had her for 6 years and saw her through skin infections, lump removals, senility and incontinence. Always treasured in my heart. ♥

Sherry

Sherry lived until she was 17 years old. I got her at 10 years old after the family returned from a months cruise and decided that a dog was too much of a tie and were going to have her euthanased.
She was fully sighted when she came to me, but within six months had developed a very rare condition that meant that her retina had slipped through to the front of her eye meaning an extremely painful eye.
She had to have the eye operated on to remove the retina.
Within six months the other eye had the same thing happen to it.
Then, to top it all the second eye operated on died, meaning she had to have the eye removed.
She also has a dodgy liver and was prone to getting infections in it.
Plus she was brain damaged.
But, she was a happy girl and her tail never stops wagging to the day she died! Rest in peace lovely old girl. Sherry was put to sleep on 22nd December 2005 due to kidney failure.

Josie

Josie was 17 years old when she died and a Collie x German Shepard. She became my dog at 12 weeks old.
She had terrible separation anxiety throughout her life. When I got my first car at 19 years old I left her in there for about 10 minutes. On my return I found that she had ripped the back seats to pieces. It all materialistic though and I got over it!
In her younger days she was very good at agility and entered shows. She developed Tendinitus at 8 years old so had to be retired from agility, but in her day she was quite good. Josie died November 2008 from heart problems.

Sally

Sally was a Terrier x (what sort of terrier we are still guessing!) who died at 17 years old.
She was given to me by a pet shop at about 4 months old because she was an 'ugly puppy'. She had been in the shop since a 10 week old puppy and nobody had bought her.
She developed an incurable disease immune deficiancy disease when she was about 10 years old meaning that she was on constant medication for 7 years, otherwise her ears and eyes ulcerated, eyes and mouth scabbed up and she generally felt awful. The medication stabilised the problem though and she was once again a happy doggie!
Sally died February 2008 of intestinal cancer.

Giggsy

Giggsy the Greyhound was 12 years old when he died and came to me at 18 months old. He was unwanted by the previous owners because he kept attacking their other (entire) male dog. Giggsy was a very strong willed dog when we first got him and everything that a dog could of done wrong...he did!

He bit my brother in the face when he first arrived, constantly threatened us when it came to food or moving out of a place that he wanted to be in and attacked other dogs without mercy. He bit one dog in the throat very nearly missing his jugular vein. After that incident he was always walked on the lead and muzzle.
Through a lot of perseverance, consistent training methods and lots of patience we finally bought him round to be a very sweet dog.
Giggsy died August 2005 after his arthritis became too much for him to bear.

Laddie

Laddie my Cocker Spanial (bottom right) - a real spoilt boy who loved me, barked constantly and LOVED his own way. Owned from 12 weeks old and died at 12 years old from Mitral Valve Cardiomyopathy (heart failure) on my bedroom floor whilst I slept after a 7 month battle with the disease November 2008.

 Conker

Conker came into rescue at 10 years old and never left
He was a very badly abused boy and for the 10 years owned by his previous owner had frequent beatings to try and curb his dominance and through fear, has bitten on numerous occasions.
On arrival he would not allow anybody to touch him anywhere below the neckline, but after much work has turned around and has learnt to trust again.
Conker was classed as unhomable due to his aggression and when the choices were to either euthanase or keep him here for the rest of his life, the decision was made very easily - he was a keeper!
Conker now has kidney issues and is incontinant, but we will carry on loving him no matter what :)

Sadly Conker went into liver failure and had to be put to sleep on New Years day 2012. Rest in Peace old friend.

Anna's tribute to her parted dogs

Sally

Sally was my little girl. She was found as a stray in Ireland and was about to be put down. We offered her space and I feel in love with her so she stayed. Sally was a wonderful girl, she was very bonded to me and followed me around like a shadow. She was perfect with other animals and loved my cat so much that every time he came in the house she would run over to him and kiss him on the nose. Sally came into my life on the 19th March 2010 and left me on the 15th March 2011. It was one of the best years of my life and I wouldn't have changed it for the world. Sadly, Sally developed a brain tumor and became unwell. My girl has left a huge hole in my heart and will be sorely missed.

As if losing Sally wasn't hard enough, I then lost Bertie almost a month later.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Bertie

Bertie was a Border Collie x Basset Hound who came to me at 9 years old.

He was found wandering the streets in Ireland and his time at the pound was up, so he came to us. I was fostering Bertie, but fell in love so he ended up staying.

Sadly, Bertie has a rare skin condition which the vets had trouble treating. Although lots of treatments were tried, the condition got worse and affected his liver and left him brain damaged and in a coma. I had to make the difficult decision to let him go on the 14th April 2011. Although he was only with me for 6 months I miss him so much, but I know he is with Sally now.

Jake

Jake is 15 years old and he came to me a few months before his 6th birthday.

Jake was brought as a companion for an elderly lady when he was a puppy, however he grew up to be a strong dog and pulled her over - breaking her hip and collar bone.

He is a wonderful dog (although quite cheeky at times!) who welcomes all foster dogs with a big sniff.

Sadly my boy left me on the 5th July 2011. I miss him so much. He was so perfect and everything is so empty without him.

Since 2005 Emma lost six of her beloved dogs and between March 2011 - July 2011 Anna lost her three dogs and rabbit. They are sorely missed and this is in memory to them...

You're giving me a special gift,
So sorrowfully endowed,
And through these last few cherished days,
Your courage makes me proud.

But really, love is knowing
When your best friend is in pain,
And understanding earthly acts
Will only be in vain.

So looking deep into your eyes,
Beyond, into your soul,
I see in you the magic, that will
Once more make me whole.

The strength that you possess,
Is why I look to you today,
To do this thing that must be done,
For it's the only way.

That strength is why I've followed you,
And chose you as my friend,
And why I've loved you all these years...
My partner 'til the end.

Please, understand just what this gift,
You're giving, means to me,
It gives me back the strength I've lost,
And all my dignity.

You take a stand on my behalf,
For that is what friends do.
And know that what you do is right,
For I believe it too.

So one last time, I breathe your scent,
And through your hand I feel,
The courage that's within you,
To now grant me this appeal.

Cut the leash that holds me here,
Dear friend, and let me run,
Once more a strong and steady dog,
My pain and struggle done.

And don't despair my passing,
For I won't be far away,
Forever here, within your heart,
And memory I'll always stay.

I'll be there watching over you,
Your ever faithful friend,
And in your memories I'll run,
...a young dog once again.
