Car Tyres play an important role in driving, if not the most important part. It is essential that you keep these in good condition, The main methods to do this is regular maintenance.
Tyre Inflation - Having the correct tyre inflation will help with Handling, Breaking, Acceleration and fuel consumption. On most cars the correct inflation level is located on the driver's side door. If you open the driver's side door it should be on a sticker located on the arch. In most cases it's measured in PSI/Bar. The correct pressure should be followed at all times, incorrect inflation can lead to major Health & Safety issues such as slower breaking, risk of a blow out and increase risk of skidding. If there is any doubt as to the correct pressure within your tyres then seek advice from the manufacturing garage ONLY.
It's a proven fact that smaller tyres can save fuel, In order to have efficient tyres you need to find the balance between Grip and Efficiency. Smaller Tyres don't have as much grip as bigger tyres but consume less fuel. They also increase acceleration, improves breaking (normally) and cheaper to maintain. So it's easy to see the benefits of having smaller tyres.
Once you have selected the tyres you wish to have on your car there are a few things you need to check.
Wheel Balance - This is done to make sure that your wheels are the same weight around the tyres, if the balance is wrong you will notice movement on the steering wheel in the form of juddering. Any tyre garage normally has the ability to balance tyres. The cost is normally £0:50-£2:50 per tyre, depending on the actual tyre itself.
Wheel Alignment - This is to make sure your wheels are identical to each other and are aligned correctly. If you hit a curb at speed this may make one tyre face the wrong direction as opposed to the other one, the difference may be point of a degree but it can have a big difference in the way your car drives.
Wheel Tread - The tread on your wheels should always be above the legal limit. The legal limit is normally marked out between the tread on your tyre. Too much tread can put a large resistance against the car and the road. Again it is essential to find the right balance between grip and efficiency.
