Behrhorst Partners for Development www.behrhorst.org works in respectful partnership with Mayan Guatemalans to have a positive impact on the problems associated with Guatemala's history of violence against indigenous populations, natural disasters, poverty, illiteracy and disastrously high rates of infant and maternal death. The community development work in villages involves water projects, stoves and latrines, Strong Family Centers, microcredit programs, and other community based initiatives. Children of the Americas www.childrenoftheamericas.org works as a nationwide network of volunteers who provide gratis medical/surgical care and treatment to children throughout the world. US volunteer surgical teams of 10-30 individuals travel to Guatemala up to four times each year and spend 1-2 weeks to operate on children with all types of medical conditions and injuries. While there, medical personnel in Guatemala are trained in the care of complex diseases. Common Hope www.commonhope.org provides the necessary resources for over 2,700 children to attend school each year in seventeen villages outside of Antigua and Guatemala City. They understand that education is about more than books and uniforms – a comprehensive approach is critical to help students and their families to reach their full potential. For this reason they also focus our efforts on health care, housing, and family development. Cooperative for Education www.coeduc.org provide educational resources and opportunities to indigenous Mayan schoolchildren in Guatemala’s Central and Western Highlands. The organization’s efforts includes creating sustainable textbook, computer center, reading, scholarship, and library programs in Guatemala. Let’s Be Ready www.letsbeready.org prepares at-risk Guatemalan children for the first-grade by establishing preschools and training preschool and first-grade teachers to be more effective with best teaching practices and materials. MayaTech Learning Centers www.mayatechic.org seeks to advance educational and technological opportunities for underdeveloped Mayan communities in Guatemala through comprehensive, culturally appropriate computer access, training and development with internet and email capabilities; sponsorship and facilitation of community and youth-focused educational programming; and promotion of projects honoring Mayan heritage. Mayan Families www.mayafamilies.org provides assistance and opportunities to the indigenous people of Guatemala, in particular in the Lake Atitlan area, through education, community programs and construction. MayaWorks www.mayaworks.org gives women an opportunity to earn an income from their skills and gives them self-confidence and hope for themselves, their children, their family and their village. Particular focus is given to educating girls through scholarships. Open Windows Foundation www.openwindowsfoundation.com is a library program in San Miguel Duenas outside of Antigua. The program offers three different types of assistance to children. First, the library allows children an area to do homework, receive tutoring, and enjoy an open library to better their reading skills. The computer center teaches children and their parents computer literacy skills as well as academic tutoring programs. Finally, a school book loan program works to fill classrooms in local schools with educational materials, books, and training opportunities. Orphans Resources International www.orphanresources.org strives to support the children of Guatemala, who through no fault of their own, find themselves alone in this world. The work focuses on providing resources of all kinds to orphanages throughout Guatemala. Safe Passage www.safepassage.org works with the poorest at-risk children of families working in the Guatemala City garbage dump. Within a safe and caring environment, they provide a comprehensive and integrated program that fosters hope, good health, educational achievement, self-sufficiency, self esteem and confidence. WINGS www.wingsguate.org is a non-profit organization founded by BPD board member, Sue Patterson, which provides knowledge, financial resources and access for the many poor Guatemalan women who want to plan their families. Programs also support initiatives with men and youth in reproductive health.
