Below are the various Episodes of Chalking Contests in Downtown Tacoma
Because the number of "Chalk Off" contests at Frost Park are accumulating, I have assembled a chronology for easy reference and continuity of the events. Feed Tacoma has a good search function too. Plus, its a way to give the chalk art drawings now long gone some additional life.
Tacoma Frost Park Chalk Off Contest Chronology
Explanation: the artists below have prevailed in the Frost Park Chalk Off Challenge on the date indicated on Friday at noon. The contests are held in Downtown Tacoma at 9th and Pacific Avenue.
For the following week, these Tacoma artists held the title of "Best Illustrator in the World of Tacoma." All Tacoma residents are invited to participate and challenge these artists, draw for fun or just enjoy lunch and good conversation.
For artists, here's a chance to display your talents and acquire some extra visibility for yourself and your "work." Just one caveat: you have to prevail against all other artistic challengers of the day.
Episode I: Week 1
LupinGoddess prevails with "Horse of a Different Color" on April 11, 2008.

Episode III: Week 3

Episode No. 3 Synopsis : More than willing to let the Tacoma artist personalities battle it out between themselves X-Men style, "Elle" secures her victory with thorough preparation, a strong local chalk theme, use of her coveted social networking site "Life of Elle," all while keeping her blood sugar up. Elle prevails in the contest with "Tacoma Gardens."
Artist statement of Elle:
I pulled off my new logo in the shortest time span imaginable because the rain was quickly approaching. In defeat, I pulled my tail between my legs and shrunk off to the pub soaking (ok not soaking but certainly) wet, but not before making an ass out of myself in a way that will surely show up on an Adam The Alien film.
Chalk Technique employed : Strong community related subject, social networking and Machiavellian opponent elimination techniques unburdened by any "artist code" which may have prevented her from voting for herself.

Episode V: Week 5
Lupin Adjusts Her Approached and Dominates with "Mon-Frog" on May 9, 2008
Episode No. 5 Synopsis : Having forfeited her initial title of "Best Illustrator in the Universe of Tacoma" after Episode I and deprived of any win for a month, the question arose as to whether Lupin, the one time star of Frost Park, had sufficient "game" to ever take the title again.
No doubt Andrea has considerable artist skills demonstrated in other mediums. However, could she acclimate to the brutish conditions of Frost Park which contestants like Stowe seemed to thrive and with the bar considerably raised?
After a few attempts, the answer was yes. From what I could observe, here's how she pulled it off:
First, she changed her chalking style. Abandoning her wispy ethereal approach, Andrea employed black chalk (charcoal?) for the first time and solid colors which make for more striking presentation.
Second, she based her chalk art entry on a strong Tacoma theme, pretty much a necessity for Frost Park entries, and a quality some of her earlier pieces lacked In this case, a 72 hour film festival entry and melded it with her artistic strengths.
Third, she simply had a good day and exhibited a lot of craft.
Prize won: A $20 gift certificate from The Red Hot and a glass bottle trophy.
Latest Artistic Statement of Lupin (Andrea):
...in the past I've abstained from voting, choosing instead to plug my ears while singing LA LA LA very loudly.
Art specialties: paintings, drawings and jewelry at Unstable Art.
Chalk Technique employed : lycanthrope, dinosaurs, chalk color explosions, creatures of the underworld, surrealistic city museums.
Frost Park fashion theme : variations on Lara Croft.
