Proposal to defero

I would like to submit a plan titled “From Content to Product”, a radical but logical strategy for defero to survive and prosper in the era of new media.

Since the Internet democratized information, content across all media has gradually become free of access. Everybody has offered their content free hoping they will leap long-term gain from advertisement revenue, sacrificing short-term profit. But reality tell us that we might have to wait longer than we have expected, or even forever.

I would not go as far to say offering free content was wrong; my point is that it was not enough. I propose defero to go further than merely providing users with accessible content, but not by making everything free. We should go backward; it is time to start offering tangible and personal products, that can be owned or experienced outside web browsers.

My plan starts with upgrading defero’s internet presence with social-media rich platform, as listed in the "Traditional" Web 2.0 Presence list below left. Additionally, I suggest “My derero” premium service as listed in the "Back to the Future" Payment Scheme list below right.

"Traditional" Web 2.0 Presence

  • Free access to all or most content, with few or no annoying advertisement
  • Social media-enhanced website with Twitter and Facebook integration
  • Dedicated blog to facilitate user comments and discussions
  • Utilize open-source architecture, lowering cost and realizing short turnaround

"Back to the Future" Payment Scheme

  • Anytime, anywhere: ebook/smartphone/iPod friendly texts, podcasts, and HD video ready for being downloaded and consumed
  • Professional analysis: extra insights into news and events that provides “why” in addition to the “what”, “when”, “who”, and “how” covered in the free content
  • Tangible products: customized DVD and colored booklets assembled and delivered on-demand, live seminars by leading professionals for selected users, etc.
