Here are some recent and not so recent paintings, now in corporate and private collections,  or that have appeared on book and magazine covers.

This is a small 8" by 10" sketch of one of my favorite railroad companies: The Western Maryland.  The unique 1200 Class giant locomotives  sped freight from America's heartland east to major cities.

Oil on Masonite panel, 10" X 8", Artist's Collection

"Louisville Train Shed" shows the Chesapeake and Ohio's "George Washington" ready to depart Louisville, KY, on a Sunday afternoon, a place where my wife and I would occasionally wind up after taking a Sunday drive while stationed at Fort Knox.  This painting has been shown at the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, VA.

Oil on Masonite panel, 24" X 28", Artist's Collection

"Purple Smoke" is a scene I saw dozens of times from a chopper in Vietnam as we rolled into a hot Landing Zone, with the 1st Infantry Division (The Big Red One).  Despite the rigors just ahead, flying above the dank air with the doors open was one of the more refreshing times I had during all time I spent there.  Oil on Masonite panel, 24" X 30", Private Collection

A cover painting for TLC Publishing.  Oil on canvas panel, 30" X 24", collection TLC Publishing

We are at a street crossing in Wichita Falls, Texas, watching the crossing guard prepare to flag vehicle traffic as a Fort Worth and Denver Railroad locomotive set slowly begins to glide to the head of its train, hook up, and leave town.  This is from a cover of Mainline Modeler magazine.  Oil on Masonite panel, 24" X 36", Private Collection.

My wife and I rode The California Zephyr after returning from overseas, en route to our next assignment.  Here we are passing through the Feather River Canyon, riding the dome car, and marveling at the majestic views.  This is scanned from the cover of a book published by TLC Publishing.

Acrylic on canvas panel, 30" X 24", Private Collection

...and here is the same image scanned from the original painting:

Another cover painting commissioned by TLC Publishing for a book by noted rail photographer and University Professor,  Dr. J. Parker Lamb.  Being asked to do the cover for one of his books was an honor.  The location is Atlanta, looking down on a typically busy time. Acrylic on illustration board, 40" X 30", Private Collection.

My pal Larry Goolsby, author of a number of railroad books, and an expert on the history of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad (another one of my favorite railroads), selected me to do the cover for his book on ACL passenger trains.  It was later published as a limited edition reproduction by the ACL Historical Society.  Oil on  canvas panel, 30" X 24", Private Collection

And here is the same painting as it was reproduced on the book cover from TLC Publishing.

Tom Dixon, one of the principals of TLC Publishing (he's the "T") asked me to do  dozens of covers for his fine line of books.  Among them is this scene of a coal mine along the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad.  Acrylic on canvas panel, 30" X 24", Private Collection

There is a large railroad yard in downtown Newport News, VA, where the C&O Railroad operates major coal export shipments, with an engine facility nearby.  Here is what it looked like decades ago from the 39th Street Bridge.  This painting was exhibited at the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, VA.  Oil on Polyflax panel, 30" X 24", Artist's Collection

Another TLC book cover, the subject is B&O Railroad passenger locomotives.  It was later published as a limited edition reproduction by the B&O Historical Society, and as the cover for the society's periodical.  Oil on Masonite panel, 30" X 24", Private Collection

I did sixteen covers for Mainline Modeler magazine.  One of the earliest is this, taken from the actual magazine cover, showing my impression of  Western Maryland Railroad's modern (for the time) "Potomac" class locomotives, heading a freight train up the Blue Ridge in Maryland.  Oil on canvas panel, 18" X 24", Artist's Collection

My friend, prolific railroad author and classical musicologist, Geoff Doughty, asked me to paint covers for several of his books, among them, this one about New York Central System stations and terminals.  The cover shows the terminal at Buffalo, New York.  Oil on canvas panel, 30" X 24", Private Collection

My longtime friend and mentor, the highly esteemed dean of railroad photographers and authors, Joe Collias, was the first to publish one of my works, in his landmark book The Search for Steam.  Putting together a book is daunting enough without having to stoop down and scoop up an image from an unknown artist.  The reproduction was excellent, in keeping with all of his books.  I still have the original, and doubt I will part with it.  This is a scan from the book.

 Oil on canvas panel, 16" X 20", Artist's Collection

And on one summer day, while wandering around the Frisco depot in downtown Lawton, Oklahoma, I came upon the locomotives assigned to freight train number 151, the daily local service out of Oklahoma City and points west, parked on a siding while the crew "went for beans" (lunch) at the mall.  I found the shadow pattern interesting, and the setting perfect for a painting.  This was published as a calendar centerfold in Railroad Model Craftsman magazine.

"Downtown Lawton", Oil on Masonite, Private Collection
