We must have both teams at the Olympics

posted ‎‎2 Feb 2009 23:39‎‎ by Eileen Waller

I have been playing water polo for over 30 years, it infuriates me that water polo has to pay the ASA registration fee. I have seen no evidence of that money being invested back into water polo, is it time we broke away from the ASA so we can generate enough funding to go to Olympics?

Can we also co-ordinate some kind of national funding raisning as water polo events across the country? I run the Kent League and would be happy to help in Kent.

I am passionate about water polo and see the Olympics as our opportunity to grow the sport at junior level. When I was growing up there were 8 junior teams in Kent, we only have a couple now! My aim this year is to review junior water polo in Kent and will start by running a tournament for the Kent Junior Cup.

Cheers, Paul

Lets give our teams a chance

I have played water polo and enjoyed it at a modest level for the last 40 years. It seems a great shame that our sport should be sacrificed at this moment of great opportunity

My father played at the top level in the 1930's, and was given his first English cap when war broke out - the game was never played, much to his disgust! We were then No 1 water polo nation. He later was a coach to the GB polo team in 1948

If he were still alive I know he would feel if we were No 1 then, why cant we aspire to greatness and prepare for the greatest sporting event now.

Lets give our teams the chance and funding necessary

New Teams for National League

FOWP would like to welcome Carlisle, Exeter City and Worthing to Division Four of the National Water Polo League (see www.nwpl.co.uk).  This is evidence of the growing popularity of the game particularly amongst young people with all three teams fielding a mixture of youth and experienced players.

From John Vincent:

I have been looking through Solihull records and have made a remarkable discovery.

Leanne Jennings played in her first National League match exactly 10 years ago on 23rd January 1999 at the tender age of 13.  Since then she has not missed a single National League match making 130 consecutive appearances over 10 years!!!

During that time she has scored 153 goals and conceded 82 majors.  I have lost count of the number of times that she has taken a shot at goal when she should have passed but that shouldn't distract from what is an amazing record of dedication and commitment.

Well done Leanne

Frances reports that she has had a reply from her MP regarding funding.

Lindsay Coyle has stated that he shares Frances and John’s concern that there are still eight sports waiting to receive news from UK Sport.  He has written to both the Secretary of State for the Department of Culture, Media and Sport and the Chief Executive of UK Sport.  He has asked Andy Burnham to clarify the funding streams that water polo has the potential to benefit from, as it may be worth pursuing other avenues.  He has asked John Steele for an estimated timescale on when the announcement for the remaining eight sports is due.

We urge everyone to write to their MP as it is clear that they will take the matter seriously and should take some fast action.   We need all the help we can get to push our cause to the forefront.

The death of Mark Molloy in a car crash on the M6 on New Year's Eve was reported on the British Swimming website. Apart from being a referee and the Preston Coach he was also the Northern Counties Coach from 2002 to 2004 and selected several members of the current GB Squad for their first representative honours. He also used to be one of the coaches at the Academy weeks at Millfield. At the weekend during the women's National League they raised £270 in memory of him which is to be given to the North West Air Ambulance.

Excellence in water polo is a very accurate barometer of a country’s commitment to, and attitude to, sport. On the part of the athlete it requires strength, stamina, swimming ability, ball handling skills, decision making skills, tactical awareness and intelligence. It also requires dedication, commitment to training, personal sacrifice, coaches that are tactically astute and possess excellent people management skills and, last but not least, a network of facilities and athlete support. Unfortunately, this all costs money and success  doesn’t come easily or happen overnight. We can debate the level of progress so far but it has to be acknowledged that British Water Polo has taken a step forward and there can be no turning back, whether it takes two, four, eight or whatever number of years to get to where we want.

From Gerry Lay Basingstoke Bluefins Waterpolo

If every nation took this approach to being a “medal prospect” in men’s water polo only around 5 teams would enter…. We surely have also got to consider  the legacy of the games and using this as an advertising platform for the sport and the other team sports that are struggling to get funding.

How come the ASA can’t afford to finance this themselves they can afford to build themselves a new office headquarters ?
