The Olympic Creed:
“The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.” BREAKING NEWS

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT
In February 2009 Friends of Water Polo agreed with British Swimming as an interim measure to fund APA’s for the Men’s Team from April to September (inclusive) 2009 to enable the squad to participate in the Europeans in September. This has meant a financial commitment of £25,000. When we were asked to do this we felt that sum was achievable. Unfortunately donations have not met expectations and have only been received from 5 families of Senior players of varying sizes and two other donors not related to squad members. We have sufficient funds to pay in June and July but thereafter we may not be able to meet this commitment if other donations are not urgently received. It is imperative for the future that the men achieve the best result that they possibly can in September.

GB Water Polo has seen its Olympic budget cut to £1.45m by UK Sport The board of British Swimming have decided to give priority to the women’s squad but the aim of British Swimming remains to have both teams in London 2012. The current funding is still insufficient to prepare one team let alone two. Friends of Water Polo have been given a target of £100,000 for this year however, we need £250,000 at least to allow both programmes to survive and stand any chance of meeting the performance criteria. This amount will buy us time and allow other ASA driven funding streams to bear fruit. In addition there is still a hope that UK Sport will be able to provide additional funds as 2012 approaches. It is important we keep the squads in training and competitive during this very difficult period. To fund the athletes of both squads on a restricted budget will amount to approximately £250,000 per annum. If we can generate 100 founding members of Friends of Water Polo who are willing to donate £1000 this will give our efforts a great start. This level of donation will entitle the donor to receive:- 1. Official listing as a founding member of Friends of Water Polo 2. Official photographs of both squads 3. A certificate confirming founding member status 4. A ‘Save Water Polo’ polo shirt 5. Invitation to players open day Naturally, any level of contribution is very welcome either by direct debit mandate or by individual one off donation. Any amount however small will push us towards our target. It is possible to increase the amount donated through gift aid. Donations are treated as if the donor has already deducted basic rate tax from them. A Charity can then reclaim this tax to increase the value of a donation. Therefore in approximate terms if we raise £200,000 the tax man will increase that closer to £250,000. Donations made before the end of this tax year will ensure the speedy processing of the gift aid.
