Friends of Cumbria Archives (FOCAS) was formed  in 1991 to support the work  of Cumbria Archive Service in the county's four Record Offices (now Archive Centres) in Carlisle, Whitehaven, Kendal and Barrow.

Our support for Cumbria Archive Service includes: 
  • financial support to assist in acquiring valuable records, equipment, books and, most recently, the cost of furnishings for the new Carlisle Archive Centre
  • assistance in transcribing, packing and sorting records under the direction of professional archivists;
  • grants to researchers using the four Cumbrian Archive Centres, for transport, photocopying etc;
  • financial assistance with transport costs to help schools to visit the Archive Centres.
  •  Members' benefits include: 
  • an annual Members' Day with guest lectures which coincides with the AGM;
  • an annual lecture symposium;
  • regular outings to places and archives of interest in the county and further afield;
  • a quarterly Newsletter, which contains a wealth of rare and interesting snippets found by researchers, book reviews, news of recent acquisitions by the archives, and information on the latest areas of assistance offered by FOCAS.
