New on the Site

You must try  Vinai Solanki's museum blog which is full of out of the way information and a really enjoyable read. Can a modern curator really wear his clogs for shopping in Blackburn? Find out here!

The President

Joy has been the chairman for the past 15 years, representing the Friends with vigour, dignity and humour. She has now decided to resign from this post which she has filled with so much success. To show our thanks we have offered, and she has accepted, the new position of President.

Our new chairman is now Mrs Valerie Miles to whom we wish equal success.

Who we are

The Friends of Blackburn Museum & Art Gallery were founded in 1982 to help in promoting and supporting the Museum.

We raise funds to expand the collection with purchases ranging from a 16th Century icon to a set of local tobacco jars.

We help with the restoration of paintings and other exhibits and assist with funds for building work.

There is a lively programme of events including lectures,(free to members) fund raising events, day trips and longer visits to historic sites, exhibitions and other collections.

Members also recieve a newsletter, Tela, twice a year which contains general articles as well as more specific Friends related material.

We are members of The British Association of Friends of Museums. Our President is one of the editors of the association's magazine and our secretary is the North west representative.
