Friends of Blackburn Museum

New on the Site

Dr. Charles Heffernan

On the 6th January 2009 Blackburn Friends lost an extremely supportive member with the death of Dr. Charles Heffernan.
Charles, with his wife, Joy (our Chair) had been a Friend of Blackburn Museum and Gallery from its beginning.
A pathologist by profession, he had lived and worked in Blackburn for over 50 years where his family grew up. His interests were numerous and varied. It was to his garden, orchard and woodland that he and Joy invited the us to a garden party to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Friends.
Charles was a gentle man with a genuine interest in his fellow men

Who we are

The Friends of Blackburn Museum & Art Gallery were founded in 1982 to help in promoting and supporting the Museum.

We raise funds to expand the collection with purchases ranging from a 16th Century icon to a set of local tobacco jars.

We help with the restoration of paintings and other exhibits and assist with funds for building work.

There is a lively programme of events including lectures, fund raising events and day and weekend visits to historic sites, exhibitions and other collections.

We are members of The British Association of Friends of Museums. Our chairman is one of the editors of the association's magazine and our secretary is the North west representative.
