The Moonlight Challenge Competition is a District level competition. It is primarily for Scouts, but some Explorer teams take part or some have Explorers assisting a Scout Team. Our Fremington teams will just comprise of Scouts as we enter the competition; if they are accompanied then they can not enter the competition officially.
The Challenge is quite a tough one for parents as they have to let their children go off without an adult and hike into the night. The Scouts, however, find this a thrilling event, and usually are so excited for it to happen again.
This year it takes place in over Friday 11th November night and possibly into the early hours of Saturday morning.
The location and route is only known by the organisers. We as leaders are not informed until the week (usually the Tuesday or Wednesday) of the challenge of the scrutineering and start point. This is to stop Troops training in the area beforehand. Leaders and parents only get to know the pick up point once the team has departed along the challenge course.
Some of the Challenges:
The Scouts navigate to a range of checkpoints. Along the way they have undergo a range of challenges to test their Scouting skills and knowledge. They are then scored on the speed they complete the course and also how many points they score on each base. Over the years there has been a range of base challenges that have included:
TEAMS: Teams must consist of between 4 and 6 Scouts. At least two of the Scouts must be able to navigate and all Scouts must have the correct kit before being released. We hope to have at least two teams entering this year.
