I am a researcher and software engineer in the area of Artificial Intelligence Decision Making systems.

My research activities apply to modelling and solving planning and scheduling problems for controlling complex physical systems with timelines in various domains: spatial, robotics, industrial.

I hold a M.Sc. (2002) and a PhD (2006) in Computer Science Engineering from the University of Rome La Sapienza and I have been associated researcher at the Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Technologies of the Italian National Research Council from 2005 to 2011. Currently I am living and working in Germany, at the European Space Agency in Darmstadt, doing research on:

    • Temporal and resource reasoning
    • Planning and scheduling integration
    • Constraint based approaches for modelling and solving planning and scheduling problems with limited resources
    • Knowledge engineering for planning and scheduling
    • Design of expressive description languages for domains and problems
    • Verification and validation of planning and scheduling domains, problems and solutions
    • Software engineering for AI based decision making systems
    • Design and deployment of planning and scheduling architectures
    • Plan execution and control for robotics systems

My research activities led to the design and deployment of software systems that have been used in various projects, both for the European Space Agency and for the European Community. Among the others:

  • APSTR: Advanced Planning and Scheduling Technology Research, TRP study, ESA-ESOC
    • GOAC: Goal Oriented Autonomous Controller, TRP study, ESA-ESTEC
    • ULISSE: Usocs klnowLedge Integration and dissemination for Space Science and Exploration, a 7FP project confounded by EC
    • APSI: Advanced Planning and Scheduling Initiative, GSP study, ESA-ESOC
    • Mexar2: A Software Tool for Continuous Support to Data Dumping Activities for Mars Express, ESA-ESOC

I am an active member of various AI conferences, like IJCAI, AAAI, ECAI and ICAPS.
