Social Justice Sites

The Social Justice Committee recommends these sites for information on UU initiatives and other social action activities:

Renewal House is a domestic violence shelter in Boston for individuals in crisis and their children. W
e had a successful fundraiser in October and it funded an event at Renewal House. There are more volunteer activities on their Web site and we will be organizing more events int he future.

Breaking Bread community meal will be held at The United Church in Walpole every Monday evening, beginning September 27th, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. All are welcome! For more information email breakingbreadwalpole@gmail.com

This is a description of the volunteers needed for each meal (meals are every Monday)

For each meal, they  need the following people:

  • 3 people for set up and serve-- beginning at 4:30 and finishing at 6:00
  • 4 people to serve and clean up (including kitchen clean up)-- beginning at 5:30 and finishing at 7:00 (overlapping with the first group, so there will be 7 people serving at 5:30 to get the meal out quickly to the guests)
  • 1 person for prep chef-- making salad, rolls and butter etc., not necessarily cooking, beginning at 4:00 or 4:30 depending upon the menu and finishing by 5:30
  • 2-3 people to prepare desserts at home and deliver to church before the meal

Project Linus is comprised of hundreds of local chapters and thousands of volunteers across the United States. Each volunteer and local chapter all work together to help us achieve our mission which is to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer "blanketeers."

Project Bread is dedicated to alleviating, preventing, and ultimately ending hunger in Massachusetts. First Parish members participate in The Walk for Hunger, the oldest continual pledge walk in the country.

The UU Urban Ministry works side-by-side with Boston's urban communities to create opportunities and instill hope for a brighter future, including Renewal House.
