Writers at Work!


Many of the kids have finished their personal narratives.
 
We use
THE WRITING PROCESS:
Students will use the complete writing process three to four times throughout the year.
 
PREWRITE: Brainstorming to get your ideas on paper. Write down everything that pops into your head about a subject. Sometimes we use a "laundry list" to collect ideas.Then they read the list and underline the ideas they might want to develop. OR Complete a organizer/map.
 
ROUGH DRAFT: Put your ideas into sentences.

READ & REVISE: Reread and look at something again. Can you make it easier to understand? Could it be more interesting? Does it have a main idea?

SHARE: Read your paper aloud to your partner or give your partner a copy of your paper that is easy to read.
 







EDIT: Editing refers to "fixing" the mechanics within the text. You correct spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors. If you tried making changes to your paper and can't see what to do with it, take a break.
 
PUBLISH: Read aloud a finished paper to your class or a different class.

Writing Workshop is where we find our voice and share our stories.
 
  1.  Author's Chair (15 minutes) authors may choose to share a completed piece or a
       work in progress.
 
 2.  Mini Lesson (15 minutes) (Direct Instruction)  focused on a specific writing convenstion 
       such as: sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and capitialization. M-Th. Use Writer's  
        Notebook
 
 3. Writing (30 minutes) This is independent writing time where kids build their writing stamina.   
      They  may be writing stories, letters, journal entries, non-fiction, and fiction.
 
 4. Conferences (conducted during writing time) Students participate in both student-led and 
       teacher-led writing conferences.
     
You’ll improve as a writer simply by writing in your notebook, day after day. But you can also fertilize your writing by collecting short, rich snippets from authors whose work you admire.
 
To achieve fluency in writing, students are encouraged to use temporary spelling as needed, although they will be held accountable in final drafts. (Publishing)
