"1917 in Arroyo Seco"
1st Place Winner
(Selected as the First Place Winner in Acrylics for the Fountain Hill's Art Competition)
"We took a trip to Pasadena and there on a beautiful December afternoon found our way to Arroyo Seco. The Colorado Street Bridge was built over this canyon in 1917 and has become an icon to the residents of Pasadena. Even though many changes have taken place in the canyon since the early years of the 20th Century I wanted to capture what it might have looked like in December of 1917 so I eliminated the concrete and steel and imagined the stream as it looked then. "The Old Chair"
"While staying a the Elysian Market B and B in Tucson Arizona I awoke on a Sunday morning and at the foot of my bed was this old chair flooded in partial sunlight from the french doors of the patio. I got my camera from the night stand and took a photograph with the full intent of painting this interesting scene."

"In 2007 we spent 3 week in Scotland in a little village on the east coast. On a drive one day we discovered an old castle with a small sign that said "Castle Balgonie." When we drove down the drive there was a sign at the front wall gate saying: "ring bell and wait or check in the garden." We did both and found "Balgonie" lingering in his garden down the hill from by the river. He came back up with my wife and offered a tour of his 14th Century castle. I took a candid photo of him inside the keep as he talked with my wife. When I got home I saw this great paint in the photo."

Painted from photograph of a Christmas Trip to Venice.
* "The decade of the Great Depression was a major force in the development of the United States. Not only was this period filled with terrible hardships for millions it also saw some of the most significant accomplishments of man. From the Empire State Building to the Golden Gate Bridge, from the electrifying of the Tennessee Valley to the building of hundreds of federal park facilities, this era forever changed what Americans felt they could accomplish and set the stage for the super power we are today. I begun a series of paintings called the "Depression Era" that will be combined with lectures and offered to High School Students in hopes that this important era will not be lost to the lack of exposure it now receives in our schools."
