Get
your Ham Radio License!
Ham radio is fun. If it wasn't fun, we wouldn't do it! Ham radio means getting to talk to astronauts using a hand-held radio- or talking to your fellow Hams around the world. Most of us had someone introduce us to Amateur Radio, and we'd like to introduce you to our hobby and invite you to join.
We Hams have a serious side to what we do. We provide emergency
communications when needed. Because we took the time to learn the rules
and regulations required by the FCC to communicate properly and safely, we're
licensed. Every Ham in the world has a unique call sign that identifies
them as an Amateur Radio Operator, from the FCC. Because we're trained and licensed, we can effectively provide a high level
of backup communications to Federal Agencies (such as FEMA), State Agencies
(such as the Georgia Department of Homeland Security) and local agencies
(including most Forsyth County emergency services). If you'd like to attend one of our classes, please check out the Classes page to get where and when the classes will be held. If you're not local, visit the ARRL web site to find a class close to you!
Other Public Services As a Ham, you can work closely with the American Red Cross to provide communications. You can work with the US Military to provide overseas communications between members of the armed forces and their family members. You can work with The Salvation Army to provide communications during times of natural disasters. Some Hams even work with the National Weather Service and National Hurricane Centers to provide help and communications during weather emergencies. Where else can you find a hobby that's not only fun- but it provides a greatly needed service? The Test Getting your license is as simple as studying a book and taking a test. The test is a 35 multiple choice test - Morse code is no longer a requirement! We recommend the ARRL Ham Radio License Manual, which is available from Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble Books or the ARRL. The book costs about $25 and will give you everything you need. Most people study the book for about 1-2 weeks and are ready to take their test, which is 35 multiple choice questions. When you're ready to take your exam, visit the ARRL web site to find a site close to your area. It costs around $15 to sit for your exam, including the licensing fee.
How about locally? We LOVE working closely with new Hams or prospective new Hams! We offer free classes on becoming a Ham twice a year, generally in the spring and in the fall, and would always be delighted to point you in the right direction. If you'd like to attend one of our classes, please check out the Classes page to get where and when the classes will be held. |
