A grand total of over £3,000 was raised so thank you to all who bid. Two more scholars started university in 2011. Beaulette Blom is going to Rhodes and Curwin Sphere has gained a place at Nelson Mandela university in Port Elizabeth. We are delighted that all their hard work has paid off. Another scholar Faith DuPlessis acheived distinctions in her final exams and is about to start university this year. Child and Family Welfare
In August 2010 the Megone family visited Grahamstown and were able to visit all the projects supported by FOGADD. We were delighted at the progress being achieved .by all the organisations. One of the most impressive developments was at Child and Family Welfare which FOGADD supports through an annual grant. Child and Family Welfare has raised funds to build three homes for children for whom they are unable to find foster carers. Each home can accommodate up to six children and is run by a house mother. Children can stay until they are sixteen. The first four children have already moved in and are clearly benefiting from proper food and care. Literacy Project On our trip to Grahamstown last August the Megone family visited Samuel Ntsiki Primary School and watched Grade 1 and Grade 2 Classes using the techniques and materials from the literacy project. The project is seeking to tackle the problem of illiteracy at the earliest stage. The children all seemed very enthusiastic and the teachers agreed to our visit despite a national strike having been called that day. Sue Pattison, the head of a York primary school, has been in Grahamstown in 2011 as a volunteer to assist with the project. Please see the latest newsletter for more details on these and other projects.
