Self Defense Course Description

The course is designed help students develop the confidence and skills necessary to defend oneself if the situation ever arises.

  • Students focus learning towards basic defense skills and ways to defend attacks.
  • Students begin in this program and after a period time have the option to enter the Martial Arts Program if desired.
  • It is recommended that students attend at least one class per week.

Description:

The goal of this course is to help students develop the confidence and skills necessary to defend oneself if the situation ever arises.  Students are taught blocks, strikes, and kicks that can be used to defend any attack.  Also, students learn specific ways to defend against the most common types of attacks.  Students should develop the confidence necessary to defend oneself and the belief that it is possible.

The Class:

Each class is one hour.  We begin class with 10 minutes of warm-ups and follow this with 10 minutes of basics.  Warm-ups and basics provide excellent exercise as well as develop important self-defense skills.  The remainder of the class is dedicated to learning how to defend specific attacks as well as develop reaction skills.  In addition, each week we discuss our “Street Smarts” subject of the week.  Sometimes this is a discussion about ways to stay safe, and other times it is a self-defense related activity.  Our “Street Smarts” segment is one part of this class that makes this self-defense program different from karate classes.

Instructions to New students:

  • Wear cloths that are comfortable to work out in.  Bring gym shoes (and clean sock for Skyline).  Shoes provide a more realistic feel, however, some skills are easier to learn without shoes.
  • Expect to have fun.  This is a serious class, but we like to have fun.
  • Plan to attend class on a consistent basis, so that skills can be developed and internalized.  It takes most students at least three months before they can effectively defend themselves.  However, even after one month, students have many skills that can be used for self-defense.
  • Understand that some martial arts aspects may be taught in class, but you are not required to participate.

Marital Arts Program Description

  • Students begin in the Self Defense Course and transition to the Martial Arts Program as desired.
  • Students learn basic defense skills and progress through the traditional martial arts curriculum. Students also study martial arts concepts and philosophies.
  • Students learn at their own pace, progress though karate belt levels, and participate in traditional martial arts evaluations.

Description:

Students in this program begin in the Self Defense Course and transition to the Martial Arts Program.  A martial arts student studies and participates in the Martial Arts Curriculum and learns traditional martial arts concepts and philosophies.  The Martial Arts Program and curriculum is very complete and includes many more aspects of the martial arts then the Self Defense Course includes.  Students learn at their own pace, and progress though karate levels and participate in traditional martial arts evaluations.

Instruction to New Students:

  1. It is recommended that students attend class twice per week. Consistency is important in order to progress and learn the skills required for advancement.
  2. Decide whether you are interested in wearing the traditional karate uniform (optional to all beginning levels).  Please inform your instructor if you are interested in purchasing a uniform.  This can be done at any local karate school or online.
  3. Begin working on the “Basic Martial Arts Student Requirements” and the “Yellow Level Requirements.”  The first step in the Martial Arts program is passing off these requirements, as it is part of the martial arts experience, tradition, and curriculum.

A Class Created with Women in Mind

When I created the curriculum and outline for our Personal Protection Self Defense Course, I thought about how my mom would feel and what she would want to learn.  The aspects of traditional martial arts classes that would make my mom feel uncomfortable were eliminated.  Our Self Defense class strives to make all students feel comfortable no matter what their personal goals are.  (However, in our Intermediate Martial Arts Classes students are introduced to more of the traditional martial arts traditions and expectations.)

My belief is that all women and children should take at least one year of Self Defense training.  As this is ideal, I understand that this is not always possible. Consequently, as I teach this class I focus on giving students the most effective and simple tools possible.  I believe that even one class is better than no training at all.  My class goal is to insure that every student has learned something new.  I strive to give my students the tools and confidence needed to defend themselves.
