Description: The goal of this course is to help students develop the confidence and skills necessary to defend oneself if the situation ever arises. Students are taught blocks, strikes, and kicks that can be used to defend any attack. Also, students learn specific ways to defend against the most common types of attacks. Students should develop the confidence necessary to defend oneself and the belief that it is possible.
The Class:
Each class is one hour. We begin class with 10 minutes of warm-ups and follow this with 10 minutes of basics. Warm-ups and basics provide excellent exercise as well as develop important self-defense skills. The remainder of the class is dedicated to learning how to defend specific attacks as well as develop reaction skills. In addition, each week we discuss our “Street Smarts” subject of the week. Sometimes this is a discussion about ways to stay safe, and other times it is a self-defense related activity. Our “Street Smarts” segment is one part of this class that makes this self-defense program different from karate classes.
Instructions to New students: - Wear cloths that are comfortable to work out in. Bring gym shoes (and clean sock for Skyline). Shoes provide a more realistic feel, however, some skills are easier to learn without shoes.
- Expect to have fun. This is a serious class, but we like to have fun.
- Plan to attend class on a consistent basis, so that skills can be developed and internalized. It takes most students at least three months before they can effectively defend themselves. However, even after one month, students have many skills that can be used for self-defense.
- Understand that some martial arts aspects may be taught in class, but you are not required to participate.
