Promotion and Evaluation
Everyone enjoys seeing progression and achievement. Therefore, certain traditional martial arts aspects will be used. The type of evaluation and the way knowledge is displayed will be determined by skill level.
System of Progression: The Levels of Progression include: q Beginning Levels: White, Yellow, Orange q Intermediate Levels: Purple, Blue, and Green q Advanced Levels: Brown through Black Each level of progression is represented by a color. These colors are based on the traditional Kenpo Karate belt colors.
Level Checks: Level checks will be used to insure students are progressing properly for their current level. Each level will require three checks.
For Beginning and Intermediate students these are informal evaluations. Scheduled checks will be held about every four to six weeks; however, as needed these checks can be completed before, during, or after class. Green and Advanced students must attend a scheduled group level (tab) evaluation. Private evaluations for Green and Advanced students will be rare and only when warranted.
Each student before evaluating must attend at least the minimum number of classes required for the next check. The minimum number of classes required at the current level for Level Checks and Level Promotion are as follows: q White, Yellow, & Orange Level Students · 1st Check - 6 classes · 2nd Check – 12 classes total · Level Promotion - 18 classes total required to be eligible for next level · Minimum: 15 weeks of study at level q Purple and Blue Levels Level Students · 1st Check - 12 classes · 2nd Check – 24 classes total · Level Promotion - 36 classes total required to be eligible for next level · Minimum: 6 months of study at level q Green, Brown, & 1st Degree Brown Level Students · 1st Check - 20 classes · 2nd Check – 40 classes total · Level Promotion - 60 classes total required to be eligible for next level · Minimum: 9 months of study at level q Red & Red/Black Level Students · 1st Check - 30 classes · 2nd Check – 60 classes total · Level Promotion - 90 classes total required to be eligible for next level · Minimum: 12 months study at level · Student must be at least 16 years of age before earning Black Belt rank.
In addition to attendance students must also know the required material for each check. q 1st check – between 1/3 to 1/2 the new requirements for the next level q 2nd check – 2/3 to all the requirements for the next level q 3rd check – All requirements for the next level are polished and are performed at the proper level of execution
Requirements for Level Promotion: In order to progress and learn more advanced material, students must understand and develop the skills required for their current level of knowledge. Once students feel they have obtained this, they are encouraged to ask for their instructor’s evaluation.
q Student has attended the number of classes required for progression. q Student has obtained the skills and knowledge required to progress to a more advanced level (items on “Level Checklists”) q Student has completed all requirements for the next level. q Student has completed all level checks. q Student has completed appropriate forms and provided them to the instructor.
Junior Tigers (Youth Students) Belt Stripes: Junior Tigers are not required to learn the full martial arts technique. Students are encouraged to practice the full techniques, but will not be asked to show them for advancement. (At the teacher’s discretion and as the student’s aptitude warrants, students may be tested on the full technique). As students mature and their aptitude increases, young students will be expected to learn the entire Martial Arts Curriculum, and at this time they will be expected to demonstrate the appropriate level of Martial Arts Curriculum for advancement. The knowledge level of a Junior Tiger will be displayed by the color of belt as well as the color of stripe on the belt (excluding black stripes). Junior Tigers will pass off the Junior Tigers Curriculum requirements for advancement; however, their knowledge of the Martial Arts Curriculum will be demonstrated by the color of stripe on the belt (ie: yellow belt with a white stripe). This program is primarily developed for students under the age of 16, however, as needed any student may progress through this course.
High Level Rankings (Levels between color rankings): Junior Tigers may also earn additional levels between color rankings. These levels will identify progression and will be used to help motivate students. For example, a Purple Level Student may earn a “High Purple” Ranking. This ranking is shown by the current color of belt with a black stripe around the middle
In order to earn these levels, students must complete ½ the requirements for the next color level, as well as attend ½ the classes required for the next color level. This program is primarily for younger students, however, as needed any student may earn a High Level Ranking. Also, a student who earns a High Level Ranking at one level is not required to earn a High Level Ranking at the next level. This program is used on a case-by-case basis and as need at each level.
Please Note: Instructor has a right to change the level requirements at any time.
