 Electrical Testing And Inspection

Electrical testing is an essential part of the compliance with the electricity at work act 1989 and health and safety at work regulations 1974. The time scale between tests varies depending on the nature of the site and the way in which the company wants to carry out the work.

It is the responsibility of the company to arrange for testing to take place; this decision is usually governed by the company health and safety policy or insurance policy. It is a legal requirement under the electricity at work regulations 1989, and the health and safety at work regulations 1974 that all electrical systems in the work place be maintained in a safe working condition. One of the most effective ways of controlling this is to assign an employee to ensure that the company have a proactive maintenance programme, therefore creating a safe working environment for both the public and members of staff.

Flying Sparks can work closely with the company to create a maintenance programme designed specifically for your needs offering advice and information during this process.

All new electrical installations should be tested and a completion certificate issued. While the certification is valid for the duration entered this can only guarantee the safety on completion of the installation and therefore can not be used to prove that the system has been maintained correctly.

Necessity for periodic inspection and testing.

Periodic inspection & testing is necessary because all electrical installations deteriorate due to a number of factors such as damage, wear and tear, corrosion, excessive electrical loading, aging and environmental influences. Consequently:

1.     Legislation requires that electrical installations are maintained in a safe working condition and therefore periodically inspected and tested.

2.     Licensing authorities, public bodies, insurance companies, mortgage lenders and others may require periodic inspection and testing of electrical installations.

3.     Additionally, periodic inspection and testing should be carried out:

·       To assess compliance with BS7671

·       On change of occupancy of the premises

·       On change of use of the premises

·       After alterations or additions to the original installation

·       Any significant change in the electrical loading of the installation

Where there is reason to believe damage may have been caused to the installation.

Flying Sparks offers a complete testing service from visual inspection and reports to part or full inspection and test working within the company’s budget.

Where possible work can be carried out during normal working hours with little to no disruption, however as some testing requires total power down some testing has to be carried out outside normal working hours. Any out of hours work is carried out at the client’s convenience and as swiftly as possible.

While periodic inspection and testing is carried out for all fixed wiring it is not suitable for portable equipment.

All electrical testing will be completed in compliance with the IEE Guidance Note 3, BS 7671 2008 and The Electricity At Work Act 1989.
