Some of my favorite sports memories:

  •  OU-Nebraska football games in  1986 & 1987
  • From ESPN: "The most vivid memory of an OU/NU is probably the 1986 game: the ultimate Sooner Magic game. Despite being dominated by an excellent Nebraska team, the Sooners, led by All-American Keith Jackson, manage to come back form a 17-7 fourth-quarter deficit to tie the game with just over a minute to go, with a 94 yard touchdown drive. The tie gave the Sooners a share of the Big 8 title and a trip to the Orange Bowl. Everyone in Soonerland breathed a sigh of relief at the narrow escape.

Then suddenly we had the ball back. Nebraska had run three quick plays then punted. With nine seconds to go, Jamelle Holieway hit, who else, Keith Jackson with a 41-yard pass deep in Nebraska territory. Tim Lashar kicked a 31-yard field goal as time expired and the Sooners had beaten the Huskers again.

As the TV cameras panned the stunned Nebraska crowd, I paused to reflect upon the injustice of it all, my elation tinged with pity for the Husker faithful. Then I went back to celebrating." -JWR, Norman, OK." (http://espn.go.com/classic/s/ou_neb_memories_fans.html)

  • From ESPN: "Billed as "Game of the Century II," No. 1 Nebraska hosted No. 2 Oklahoma. Unlike the '71 game, this one was a one-sided affair.

The Cornhuskers jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead on Keith Jones' 25-yard run. But the Sooners defense dominated the rest of the game allowing Nebraska to cross midfield only three times during the whole contest.

Led by Dante Jones and Ricky Dixon, OU's defense held Nebraska to 235 total yards, 289 under its nation-leading average. Dixon set up the Sooners first score with an interception return to the Nebraska 13-yard line. Anthony Stafford tied the game with an 11-yard TD run.

OU's freshman quarterback Charles Thompson was one of three Sooners to break the 100 yard total on the day. His pitch-out on an option sprung Patrick Collins on a 65-yard touchdown scamper late in the third quarter. R.D. Lasher tacked on a 27-yard field goal late in the fourth to seal Oklahoma's 17-7 win. If not for four Sooner fumbles, it would have been a lot worse." (http://espn.go.com/classic/s/ou_neb_top_games.html)

  • Michael Jordan's final shot (as a Chicago Bull) wins the NBA championship (http://www.pdngallery.com/20years/sports/images/18_fernando_medina.jpg)

  • Michael Jordan beats Cleveland in the last second and the Bulls advance to the Eastern Conference finals 1989 (http://www.nba.com/media/bulls/jordan_050427.jpg)

  • Chicago Bears, 1986 season (alas the Shuffle, though)

  •  1918 forgotten: 2003/04 Boston Red Sox come back from three games down to knock the Yankees out of the playoffs...and, oh yeah, win the AL pennant

Some of my most painful sports memories:

  • Without a doubt, the worst was April 4, 1988, Kansas City, MO, when the Oklahoma Sooners lost to the Kansas Jayhawks in the NCAA finals.
  • Almost as painful was 1986 World Series, in which the NY Mets beat the Boston Red Sox. I don't know why this was so painful, because I was never a Red Sox fan, but it was a series I will never forget.
  • All three of the OU football losses to the Miami Hurricane 1985-1987
  • 1986 AFC Championship Game. John Elway takes advantage of the infuriatingly inept Marty Shottenheimer 'prevent defense' to take the Broncos to the Super Bowl (where justice in the form of Phil Simms and Lawrence Taylor awaited them)
