Teaching & Learning with Video

Introducing the Flip Video Camera in HD

The Flip Video Camera in HD takes high quality video that can be easily transferred to your computer and uploaded to a video sharing site.  You do not need to know a lot about video production to use this camera.  In fact, the beauty of this tool is that it turns all of us into video producers.  With this camera, it's all about "shoot-transfer-broadcast".

The "why"
Why would you want to incorporate video into teaching & learning?  There are a couple reasons, but the ones that stands out the most to me focuses on brain theory:

FACT:  We are incredible at remembering pictures. Hear a piece of information, and three days later you'll remember 10% of it. Add a picture and you'll remember 65%.

Along the same lines is sensory integration and it's impact on learning:

FACT: Those in multisensory environments always do better than those in unisensory environments. They have more recall with better resolution that lasts longer, evident even 20 years later.  If we can turn some of our learning experiences into visual and sensory integrated experiences, we've taken a step in the right direction!

The "what"
You may be wondering what you can do with this video camera....what would your assignments look like?

Idea #1
Have a student take video of an in-class demonstration OR video yourself (using the tripod) explaining a difficult concept
  • upload the video to YouTube or Blackboard as a resource to students so they can view it over and over to better understand the concept (drill and practice)
  • upload the video to YouTube and have students leave video or text comments about the video -- give them a specific prompt to respond to. (discussion/dialogue)
Idea #2
Take video of students giving oral presentations
  • provide students with the videos to critique themselves
Idea #3
Have students take video of other students explaining a concept with visual aids
  • their finished products can be uploaded to Youtube or Blackboard and used as enrichment materials for those students who need to view concepts several times.
