William C. ‘Bill’ Miller served 38 years in the Idaho Air National Guard. He enlisted while still in high school, served 7 years in aircraft maintenance, and in 1965 was commissioned and attended Undergraduate Pilot Training at Laredo AFB Texas, receiving Distinguished Graduate and Academic Training honors. Following UPT and Interceptor training, he returned to the 190th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, flying as an F-102 pilot, and in 1969 graduated from ADC’s Interceptor Weapons Instructor School. He then held Squadron assignments as interceptor pilot, Weapons Instructor, Alert Detachment Commander, and of course, alert bum.With IDANG’s re-assignment under TAC in 1975, he flew the RF-4C aircraft for the 190th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, holding positions as Instructor Pilot, Flight Examiner, Operations Officer, Chief of Stan/Eval, and from 1986 to 1990, 190th TRS Commander. He has completed Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff School, National Security Management, and Air War College by correspondence, and attended Air War College in residence; class of 1985. He later flew as pilot and Aircraft Commander in the IDANG’s C-26B support aircraft while Director of Operations, HQ IDANG. In 1996 he retired as a Colonel, flying a C-26 mission on his final day in the Guard. “Aside from 4 years as a maintenance technician in the ‘60s, my Idaho Air Guard career was as a part-timer”, he says. Miller graduated from Boise State University with a BS degree in social science, was certified as a Secondary Education instructor, and in 1986 completed coursework for BSU’s Masters in Public Administration program. He was employed by the Idaho Transportation Department from 1973 to 1992 holding positions as Employee Training and Development Officer, Highway Safety Manager, and Aeronautics Administrator. He has flown as a private pilot and commercial pilot, with Commercial, Instrument, and Airline Transport ratings, and is an aircraft owner. Bill was a founding member and officer of several aviation and historical organizations, including the Idaho Military Historical Society, which he helped to organize and for which he currently serves as Board member. Bill and his wife Stephanie raised three children, Chuck, Paul, and Sarah, and live in Boise Idaho. |
