Reading

Curriculum Overview

The reading program uses the Balanced Literacy model supported by the district. Strategies and techniques are taught through modeling and mini lessons using short stories, drama, poetry, and novels. Students practice their skills in small guided groups using material at their own instructional reading level. With teacher guidance, students self-select books for independent reading. Literacy elements and genres are taught in conjunction with skills and strategies identified by the Illinois Learning Standards. Both contemporary and classical short stories and novels are included in each grade's studies.

General Procedures and Assessments

Library Days
Every two weeks, students will go to the library and check out books! At this time, each student will be required to get one book for the current unit being taught in class and any other book of their choosing. Books must be brought to class on library days.
Silent Reading
We begin each day with 10 or so minutes of silent reading, as practicing reading is a great way to improve reading skills.
Unit Tests
At the conclusion of each unit, as assessment in the form of a standardized multiple-choice test will be administered. These tests are based on the curriculum used in reading class. Students will be given the opportunity to go review their test results after taking each test.
Assessment of Course Grade
All components will be assigned a point value, depending on importance. The assignment categories are:
  • Daily Assignments (silent reading, warm-ups, notes, quizzes, journals, general class work, homework, participation)
  • Major Assignments (tests, projects, presentations)
