Enrichment

What is the Enrichment Class?

Enrichment is taught during FLEX.  The middle school enrichment classes have been created to allow teachers and students the opportunity to enrich the regular curriculum with activities that will employ higher level thinking skills and challenging activities.  Skill building will emphasize the higher level thinking skills of application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation from Bloom’s Taxonomy. The enrichment class curriculum will be an extension and enhancement of the regular curriculum at each grade level.  Units emphasize the content areas of science and social studies, but students will also utilize skills from other areas of the curriculum including:  reading, math, language arts, and fine arts.

7th Grade Enrichment Units

The following units were created for the enrichment class.  Not all of these units will be taught throughout the year.  New units are added to the curriculum all the time.  In fact, each year at least one student-created unit is used!  So, if you have any ideas, please let me know.

Contemporary Affairs (6th - 8th Grade)

Students develop an enhanced understanding of contemporary affairs by incorporating critical thinking skills and analysis.

Caravans

Through role-playing simulations students improve their knowledge of world geography while they travel around the world on a treasure quest as a member of a caravan.

If Shipwrecks Could Talk

Students learn the methods and tools ancient mariners used to navigate and some of the most common causes of shipwreck. They discover how archaeologists work in the marine environment to discover, map, and interpret historic shipwrecks.

Debate & Genetics

Students learn the elements of a well-constructed argument, and then apply that skill to a critical evaluation of the ethical application of genetic research.

Renaissance Man

Students explore some of the exceptional art, artists, and scientists of the Age of the Renaissance.

Our Neighbors: Canada & Mexico

Many people in the United States are not familiar with the geography or culture of our neighbors to the north and south, Canada and Mexico. Students will focus on Canada by:  completing a Canadian map exercise, doing an activity to discover what they really know about Canada, completing a video guide while viewing a video on Canadian geography and culture, researching a Canadian province, creating a travel brochure on the province, and sharing their brochure with the class. Next, the students will focus on Mexico by:  completing a Mexican map exercise, doing an activity to discover misconceptions about Mexico, viewing and discussing videos on Mexican geography and culture, and playing the Mexican Cities Flag Race, which involves “visiting” Mexican cities to discover the variety of geography, climate, and culture in the country of Mexico.

Money

Money is a teacher created unit designed to allow students to explore the history, production, and design of the coins and currency they use everyday.

Music

This teacher created unit is designed to help students become familiar with music in the world’s cultures, and the instruments that make music unique.  Students will make musical instruments imitating those studied, and play simple songs together as a “band”.
