COMMUNICATION DIFFICULTY
- Communication difficulty is almost always linked to autism, especially verbal communication difficulty. This can range from not being able to speak at all to acting very hyper when speaking.
- For a lot of people who have high-functioning autistim, being able to speak is not a problem at all. However, it can sometimes be very difficult for them to speak in public, or around somebody they don't know.

My name is Russell, and I am 16 years old. I was diagnosed at the age of twelve with high-functioning autism. I have had a ton of obstacles thrown my way throughout life, but I am still standing. I recently wrote an article for The Autism Perspective (TAP), and am in the midst of writing another one. Below, I offer some very helpful techniques for communicating with an autistic mind.
HELPFUL TIPS & STRATEGIES
- When the person is distressed, it is very easy for them to become overwhelmed. You can help this by keeping a calm demeanor and speaking with a peaceful tone.
- When trying to figure out what the problem is, ask simple ''yes'' or "no" questions. This will help the person from becoming even more overwhelmed and confused.
- Help them express their feelings. Expressing one's feelings is extremely important for helping the human body calm down.
- Help them use their coping skills. Coping skills help a great deal of amount when trying help the person calm down and distract themselves. Some examples are playing with balls, squeezing clay or chewing on an object (i.e. a straw).

Is autism a mental illness?
A:
No. Autism is a disorder. It originates from genes, such as cromosone 17. This may delary expected abilities such as speaking or smiling.

What are some common medications for autism?
A:
At the moment, there are no specific medications for autism only. There are medications, however, for autism related symptoms. Common symptons of autism include OCD, anxiety, meltdowns, and depression.
Usually, each of these symptoms are treated alone. The best advice I can give you is to check with your doctor.
