current events and notices.
Kimio Nelson's Fighting Tigers Martial Arts makes it easy and interesting to learn about
Karate, kobudo (weapons) and Self Defenser. We offer 2 different styles of Japanese self-defense classes for ages 6 and older. All in a safe fun environment. Check the tabs on the right for a description of all our classes.
Martial Arts is a great way to promote health, personal development and self-defense ability. Is it for you? The best way to find out is to talk to someone skilled in this art, watch a training session -- then try it! We offer 2 free classes to see if its for you.
This year, the Fighting Tigers celebrate their 23rd-year anniversary of providing the Warren and Jamestown area the best in Martial Arts instruction. Formed in 1988, the club holds classes for children and adults in traditional martial arts, self defense and weapons.
Head Instructor Kimio Nelson shares knowledge from more than 40 years of teaching and national and world-class competition. He provides high quality instruction, personal attention to the progress of each student and a safe, friendly and supportive learning environment. Classes are available for adults and children ages 6 and up. The club’s motto, “Training for Black Belt Excellence”, embodies a commitment to bringing out the best in each student by using both traditional and modern methods.
I will show you that there are many rewards of successful martial arts training, besides the ability to defend oneself and to avoid conflict. You can increase your confidence and leadership skills and develop your ability to work well with others. The training also brings improved fitness, better self-control and a strong spirit of effort and commitment. We stress personal growth and achievement in each student.
A combination of proven modern and traditional training programs is used to make learning consistent, effective and fun. Class enrollment size is limited to ensure a good student-to-teacher ratio. Each student receives frequent one-on-one attention and progresses at his or her own rate. We are not a belt mill. Each student has the responsibility to work hard with rank advancement recognizing achievement. The curriculum includes conditioning exercises, forms, point sparring, and self-defense training. Proper use of karate, respect for others and discipline are emphasized.
The Fighting Tigers Karate Team, within the club, provides an opportunity for tournament
competition and training for students who are interested in this aspect of the art but competition is not mandatory. I formed the school’s Competition Team in 1990. Team members have excelled building an impressive record of medal wins at the Local, State, Regional, National and World levels. The Fighting Tigers Karate Team has
earned a total of 11 National titles, 19 Eastern US Regional and 26 Pennsylvania State Titles in fighting, weapons and forms competition as well as several hundred trophies and medals at local tournaments in the tri-state area. Some local schools falsely claim World Titles but we are the areas only National Champion level Martial Arts school.
In November 2009, the Fighting Tigers moved into their new location at 1740 Allegheny Ave on Warren’s Westside which has the room and layout for many of my future programs. Our new facility provides
changing rooms for our
students, a seating area for visitors, activity room and a friendly clean safe environment to train in. We even have an arcade room where parents and students can test their skills. The second room serves as an extra training area for private classes and activity room to hold our Ultimate Birthday Parties and other group activities. My instructors and I offer high quality instruction with personal attention to the progress of each student using a combination of modern and traditional training programs to make learning consistent, safe, effective and fun.
Our Tigers After School Karate (TASK) is our children's program and and Kimio's Institute of Classical Karate (KICK) is our Adult Karate program but the Fighting Tigers instructors offer several other programs at the Warren school. We also offer Day and Evening classes, Summer Camps, Ken-Do Fitness, KICK Self-Defense, Tae Kwon Do, Weapons training, Ultimate Birthday Party, Tai Chi Exercise, private classes, In-Your-Home classes, Special Group classes, personal self-defense tactics classes, seminars on specific martial arts topics and Students with Special Needs classes. The TASK self defense class (GoshinJutsu) focuses on various types of self-defense, including control techniques, aggressive counters, ground-fighting, weapons defenses, and conflict avoidance and de-escalation. The emphasis is on practical, simple techniques which do not require great physical strength or size. Special seminars may also be arranged for people who work in environments with specific demands, such as law enforcement and security, mental health, hospital, group home and similar agencies, and for those interacting with the public, such as tavern owners, real estate personnel and retail merchants. We now offer an In-Your-Home program where classes can also be held in your home if you don't want to come to the dojo. Instructors are also available to present free informative programs for non-profit organizations. For more information on classes, seminars and programs, contact Kimio Nelson at 723-BELT (2358). Information is also available on Face Book. Just type in “fighting tigers” in the search box.
We’ve celebrated many successes over the years and I’ve seen many of my students develop into fine adults. I hope some of what they learned in class as far as respect, dedication, perseverance, self-control and leadership has carried into their daily lives. I would like to thank everyone, including my present
students and parents, who have helped make the school a success over the past twenty-three years. I find myself now teaching the children of former students when they were children (not that I feel old or anything). I hope to carry on the success of the Fighting Tigers for many more.
The Fighting Tigers offer Champion level training at small-town value. We encourage you to visit other area school to get the best fit for you or your child. Check the side bar for suggestions on what to look for and how to pick a school. I hope you agree that my school is the best in the area and come try us out for two free lessons to see what we have to offer.
