Discussion of methods, techniques, and opinions related to Violin/Fiddle building, repair, and restoration. This Website is in production - more coming on a regular basis.
Pictured above is the finished product. After sealing the violin and adding base coats of varnish, I chose not to add color to the finish as I liked the appearance as is. Adding color and shading is helpful in hiding imperfections and although this instrument has some, they are minimal in my opinion and I felt no need to try to hide them.
| I have always loved the sound of the violin / fiddle, whether classical or bluegrass. About 20 years ago, I saw an ad for a number of violins on a bulletin board and after contacting the seller, went to take a look. It turned out the woman's husband was a luthier and had died and left his shop with about a dozen unidentified and unclaimed violins in need of various repairs. I bought the whole batch, and the woman was kind enough to give me her husbands luthier tools as a bonus! That was the start of my luthier endeavors. After repairing and restoring those and numerous other violins for approximately 20 years, I really wanted to build one from scratch. My retirement approximately 2 years ago finally gave me the opportunity. The violin pictured took approximately one and one-half years to complete - I wouldn't want to do it for a living!
