Some mushrooms are poisonous. The simple rule to observe when picking mushrooms is:
If in doubt,
Throw it out!

You do not want to wind up in hospital due to misidentification.

Any photographs and written information on this website is not enough for a beginner to make confident decisions about the toxicity of a particular mushroom.

If you are a novice, it is strongly advised that you seek out an experienced mushroomer and obtain in-the-field guidance.

About

The Fungus Federation of Santa Cruz (FFSC) is an informal affiliation of friendly, fun-loving, sometimes frenzied fungophiles dedicated to the knowledge, pursuit and appreciation of wild mushrooms. We organize many activities during the mushroom season from September through May.  The Long Distance Forays focus on overnight outings in Northern California, the Sierras, and other fruitful locations.

Remember to always to "be prepared" when you strike out to foray:

Along with your mushroom basket and knife, carry a first aid kit and emergency supplies (such as a whistle, compass, and extra food).

"We pursue fungi out of hunger, curiosity and addiction.  We seek improved access to greener grass, deeper duff, and the warmth and security of togetherness..."
