That's a Vulcan' fine anvil!

Good anvils are scarce in this day and age. Sure , you can buy a new one , but shipping costs to Tasmania are huge , plus anything new comes at a non-negotiable price.

Hence , once I saw this big 'un I sort of felt I had to grab it , even if I had to release my first love , the 50kg BK Sydney anvil. The 21st March 09 was a day to remember!

Vulcan is a 124kg model (7.75 pood to use the Russian system) , no markings , lava coloured paint job (which I have now stripped back to bare metal) and in very good condition. By and large the face plate is smooth and flat though there is a slight concavity with respect to the ends. That should not affect function. The edges are pretty sharp too and the beak shows relatively little wear. I can't find any identification marks , a little disappointing but sometimes these are hidden by layers of paint.

The exact weight is uncertain - the bathroom scales went round the clock!  I suspect that this is probably a 127kg anvil = 2 1/2 cwt

Here we are after a bit of surface dressing with the sander.

The best thing was that the anvil was free. The stump was a bit pricey though...
