FearMonger for the iPhone

What is FearMonger?

FearMonger is an iPhone application which uses crime and traffic accident data to produce a Fear-o-meter score based on your current location.  The Fear-o-meter score ranges from zero to one hundred, with one hundred implying the greatest fear level.  Your cumulative fear exposure is recorded on a Fear-odometer, and built-in Facebook connectivity allows you to share your current fear level with your friends.  FearMonger is for entertainment only!

the Fear-o-meter score
The Fear-o-meter score is calculated from a variety of sources.  The two categories currently supported are personal crime and car accident statistics.  These data come from international, national, statewide and in some cases local reporting agencies and are generally normalized per capita.  However, because of inconsistencies in the way different organizations record crime, Fear-o-meter scores can sometimes be higher or lower than your expectations.

Coverage
FearMonger coverage is generally at the city wide level, but limited intra-city data are available for major metropolitan areas.  Currently, Fear data is limited to the United States, with single point data available for some countries.  Data for England and Wales are also available, but on a testing basis.  Future versions may include expanded data for other countries.  FearMonger does not contain street level crime data.

Using FearMonger
What is the big blue meter?

The meter graphically depicts your current fear-o-meter reading.

What is the thing that looks like an odometer?
This is the Fear-odometer.  It works like the odometer on your car, but instead of accumulated miles, it keeps track of accumulated Fear.

What about the Green button?

The green button can be used to update your Facebook status.  In order to use this, you must first
  1. Have a Facebook account
  2. Be logged into Facebook using the Facebook connect button at the lower left
  3. Allow FearMonger to have extended permission (FearMonger will prompt you for this).
After this, you will be able to update your Facebook status by clicking the Green button, previewing the status update text, and then accepting it.  Note that once you have successfully logged into Facebook, you should see text that looks like "Logged in to Facebook as Your Name", and the connect button turns into a logout button.

And the Blue button?
