I am interested in the functional significance of spontaneous activity (or "noise") in the brain.

I use topographic EEG & ERP approaches to assess how the momentary state of the brain determines subsequent processing of physically identical stimuli like e.g. ambiguous figures, binocular rivalry, and masked or degraded stimuli.

On a more basic level, I am interested in the intrinsic temporal organization of the basic building blocks of the EEG (i.e. EEG microstates) and how that relates to different levels of consciousness in humans, simians and rodents.
