Current Community Priorities

FBG CARES Community Priorities:

September 2008 edition

 

1.  Community Survey/Benchmark data:
a.  Complete reporting to City/Staff/Community on business survey.
b.  Aggregate residential and commercial issues
c.   Develop a strategy and action plan to implement key recommendations.
d.  Status:  Surveys complete; second survey results presentation 9/15; Year end report pending in 4Q

2.  Propose and implement pilot recycle station program on MarktPlatz
a.  Suggest added (phase 2) recycle bin locations in CBD and beyond
b.  Gather continuous consumer behavior data:
i.    Wildseed Farm Chili Festival recycling bins
ii.    Farmers Market recycling bins
iii.    Main Street Dumpster Diving (MSDD)
iv.    St. Mary’s School public event recycling
v.    Status: in 2009 budget

 

3.  Develop and implement annual community e-waste collection program
a.  In collaboration with City (messaging, advertising, co-sponsorship)
b.  Focus on both residential and business participation
c.   Involve high school and other community based organizations as volunteer staff
d.  Arrange for FREE pickup from a central drop off point (St. Josephs Hall current target)
e.  Status: October/November 2008

 

4.   Organize and implement a “dirty street cleanup/adoption”
a.  Solicit community input
b.  Maintain list of suggested areas for clean up
c.   CARES to adopt the no. 1 strip of roadway
d.  Engage business community and other organizations to take on other named locations.
e.  Implement quarterly clean up as pilot program (using TXDOT/City collection process where possible)
f.    Status:  In progress of taking nominations; first clean up in 4Q 2008.

 

5.   Continue to increase community awareness of  the importance of reducing, reusing, recycling for all community participants via effective communication and events including:
a.  Newspaper articles, advertisements, letters to the editor, radio
b.  Speaking engagements at clubs and schools
c.   Best practices data sharing from other communities
d.  Building and maintaining an easy to use web site resource for common questions and issues facing us all (www.fbgcares.com)
e.  Sponsoring a variety of ways to involve the community in implementation of proactive, positive change management relative to the environment
i.    Advocating public places recycle stations
ii.    Assisting organization who need help how to recycle
iii.    Support of City staff and recycle center programs/best practices (local, regional, national)
iv.    Policy recommendations for landfill impacting issues
v.    Representation relative to affordable, sustainable housing
vi.    Sponsorship and execution of EARTH DAY celebration/family picnic (APRIL every year)
