posted ‎‎Mar 17, 2009 6:46 AM‎‎ by David Lewis

Fredericksburg CARES announces Spring ELECTRONIC WASTE Recycling Date --- Back by popular demand, FBG CARES will once again be doing a public service for those individuals and businesses in the community who have old equipment taking up closet and desk space.  All office equipment, monitors, keyboards, PCs, shredders, printers, fax machines etc. are eligible for drop off to be professionally recycled.  FBG CARES is combining its annual, fun for everyone EARTH DAY Celebration with this event on APRIL 25th  from 9 am to 3 pm in the Kinder Halle at Marktplatz.  There will be exhibits, a solar telescope, dog recycling (aka adoption), vendors, live music and more. Event details will be advertised starting April 1, 2009 but mark your calendar now.  This is a free community service -- $5 donations per drop off is appreciated but not required.  Last fall, FBG CARES, with support from the City of Fredericksburg, Gillespie County and Technology-Recycling out of San Antonio, collected over 48,000 pounds (two 26 foot trucks filled to the rafters) of old equipment.  For questions, you may call Bjorn Kirchdorfer at 990-8303, email info@fbgcares.com or visit the organization’s website at www.fbgcares.com.

Recylables Take a Nose-Dive as a Commodity

posted ‎‎Dec 10, 2008 7:41 AM‎‎ by David Lewis   [ updated ‎‎Dec 10, 2008 7:53 AM‎‎ ]

The Austin American Statesman ran the article: "Crash in Value of Trash Puts Dent in Budgets".  Communities all over the country are facing tough decisions about the fate of recyclable garbage.  The cost, in many cases, is higher to send it away than to put it into a landfill.  Economics aside, I suppose communites similar to Fredericksburg will need to assess the ethical relationship between garbage and recyclables.

The New York Times also ran a similar article on Monday. Back at Junk Value, Recyclables are Stacking Up & Refusing to Take 'No Recycling' for an Answer
