What are the hours of the Recycling Center?
Located at 302 E. Ufer, the Center is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 730 am to 530 pm and on Saturday from 8 am to Noon.
What items are accepted?
Newsprint, telephone books, bond paper, junk mail, magazines, catalogs, corrugated cardboard, no. 1 and 2 plastics, glass bottles and jars, tin and aluminum cans.
What can I put in my compost pile?
Dry components (leaves, grass clippings, dirt) and wet components (food refuse (vegetable, fruit, egg shells, coffee grounds)) but no animal matter (e.g. meat scraps)
Which are better, plastic bags or paper bags?
Studies (a bit dated) show that plastic bag production is less impacting than the production of paper bags. HOWEVER, most plastic bags are not biodegradable. China as a country just outlawed all retail plastic bags as of June 1, 2008. Bring your own canvas bags is best of all.
What construction materials are recyclable?
This is a subject we aim to study in more detail given the large volume of construction in our area. An unscientific survey shows a lot of lumber being added to our landfill which should largely berecyclable/reusable.
How long do things "live" in a landfill?
Based on Whole Foods and Worlwise.com sources, plastic bags last over 1000 years, aluminum cans 80-100 years, tin slightly less at 50-100, plastic coated milk cartons five years and even our organic organge peel lasts six months depending on conditions. Paper is the shortest at 2 to 5 months.
