Lead

Teachers must demonstrate leadership inside the classroom and beyond.  Outside my classroom I demonstrate leadership in the following ways:

< namespace="" prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" xml="true">

  • Leading curriculum development projects
  • Club moderator
  • Professional development

Collaboratively with my colleagues I have designed and lead the curriculum change at our school from a traditional lecture based style to more effective inquiry based instructional methods in chemistry and biology.  I have implemented the new course Active Chemistry in 2007 and will implement Active Biology in 2008.

I moderate two student lead clubs at school that reflect students’ interest in science outside of the classroom and allow students to assume leadership positions.  The Pre-med club visits hospitals, observes surgeries and invites speakers on campus to explore health care fields.  The Pro-earth club is an environmental club with organizes beach clean-ups, recycling programs and also educates the campus on environmental issues.

I have engaged in ongoing professional development throughout my teaching career.  Examples include graduate level education course, chemistry courses and workshops designed to help incorporate more innovative science teaching strategies and labs in my classroom.  To keep up with the dynamic field of education, continuous professional development is imperative.
