minted lamb

she stuffs valuables in coffee
tins     secreted in cupboards
nudging cans of baked beans

she feigns two jewellery boxes

stores inexpensive pieces

in conspicuous position... valuables
cached, believing thief to be fooled

by the cheaper box       tricked to stop

looking

she uses engraving pen, marks

big-ticket electronics with her name
hoping the robber may not bother

 .... harder to sell

she prunes back shrubbery, tall
trees from windows, doors to
limit access.... installs alarm

- motion detector lighting

she fortifies castle, ensuring
hinges interior, places metal

in tracks of sliding apertures

she blitz codes locks      yet her
boy, desperate for fix, manages
to rip from her. .. and she thinks:
minted lamb - he used to

like that
