I am a PHD candidate and a teaching assistant in the English Department at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. My area is English as a Second Language (ESL) with specialties in World Englishes and Composition and Rhetoric. I am currently teaching English 62000 (Classroom Communication for International Teaching Assistants) at the Oral English Proficiency Program (OEPP). I am also a rater of the Oral English Proficiency Test (OEPT) that is designed by OEPP to ensure compliance with university policy regulating the English proficiency of international teaching assistants at Purdue University. For the past three years, I have taught English 10600 (Introductory Freshman Composition) and English 10600-I (Composition for International Students) at Purdue University. During that period, I had the opportunity to work for various institutes in different professional positions for the summer: In 2007, I had the pleasure to be part of a team that taught English as a Foreign Language in the Tawteen Program at Abu Dhabi University, the United Arab Emirates. In 2008, I worked with Dr. April Ginther on designing the English curriculum for The English Preparatory Program at the American University of the Middle East, Kuwait. In July 2008 and 2009, I was hired with other instructors from Purdue University by the Changzhou Bureau of Education to train Chinese teachers in ESL pedagogy and American culture in the English Language Teaching Professional Development Program. Before working in Purdue University, I spent two years at the University of Toledo attaining my Master's degree in ESL. While studying, I taught Arabic as a Foreign Language in the Foreign Language Department. I also worked in the American Language Institute (ALI) where I taught basic and advanced listening labs. While studying ESL, both as an MA and PhD student, I presented my research and my ideas on teaching in several conferences such as Ohio TESOL, Indiana TESOL, EDL Graduate Student Conference in Miami University, and the Purdue Linguistic Association Conference. Most recently, I co-founded and organized the Annual Symposium on ESL studies in Purdue University. The first symposium was held on April 4th, 2009. I also organized conference panel and co-presented on applying World Englishes in the classroom for Indiana TESOL. Now, I am working on my dissertation that examines English spread in Lebanon along with issues of identity, imperialism, and language policy. |
