Following a Sustainable Wildlife Enterprises workshop in Broken Hill in February 2008, agreement was reached between a number of landholders, kangaroo harvesters, natural resource management (NRM) facilitators and researchers to work towards the formation of a National Association of Kangaroo Growers and Harvesters. This website has been established as a resource to assist that process.

The general idea agreed to at the workshop was for an association to be established, supported under the umbrella of the FATE Program at the University of New South Wales, and initially involving interested landholder, harvester and NRM representatives from three areas - The Barrier Area Rangecare Group (BARG), north of Broken Hill in NSW, the Mitchell and District Landcare Group, from Mitchell in southwest Queensland and the Rangeland Management Action Plan (RMAP), based around Wentworth in southwest NSW.

Each of these groups have been working on Sustainable Wildlife Enterprise (SWE) options under the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation's recently-concluded Rangelands and Wildlife Program. The role of a national association would be to:

• Consolidate the research efforts of these groups to date
• Plan for future collaboration amongst these and other groups, including on potential funding options; and to
• Provide a united voice to represent landholders and harvesters who are interested in collaborating on kangaroo management to deliver improved economic, social and environmental outcomes
