Tips for Reinforcing Math Skills at Home

Encourage your child to help figure out the time with you whenever appropriate.

Let your child assist you with money whenever possible.  Try to help them with the names and values of the coins.

Practice flashcards in the car, during commercials, while waiting for an appointment, etc.

Play games with your child that incorporate math:  Junior Monopoly, Yahtzee, Uno, SkipBo, etc.

Encourage your child to play math games that are sent home by their teacher.  Put them in their Math Bag so they are easy to access and don't get lost!

Play computer games and explore websites that involve math.

Count objects while in the car (5 signs, 10 houses, etc.) and then count them backwards.

Skip count (count by 2s, 5s, 10s) while driving, during commercials, etc.

Bake a cake or cookies with your child.  Talk about measurement or fractions while you bake (2 half cups = 1 cup).
