Summary Elijah Swift (1774-1852) owned a live oak business and salt works in Falmouth. Profits from these businesses were invested in the shipbuilding business. By the height of the whaling industry he was one of Falmouth’s most prominent citizens and entrepreneurs. Students learn about the salt works business, the live oaking industry, and Swift’s shipbuilding business. They examine the life of Elijah Swift in relationship to maritime commerce, profit-making, supply and demand, and entrepreneurship. Students review economic concepts as they examine another Falmouth business, the Pacific Guano Company, which thrived in the second half of the nineteenth century.
