Wave Properties

1. Radio waves travel at the speed of light, 3000,000,000 m/s.  What is the wavelength in meters of a radio wave from an AM station broadcasting at a frequency of 750 kHz?

2. The speed of sound is 332 m/s at 0.0 C, and increases 0.6 m/s for each degree of temperature rise.  A tuning fork is in a room with a temperature of 32 C.  What is the wavelength of a sound emitted by a tuning fork at 440 vibrations/second?

3. A boat 4m long is anchored facing the waves.  The waves have a speed of 5 m/s.  It is possible for exactly 3 wave crests to fit under the boat at one time.

a) Calculate the frequency of the waves.

b) The boat lifts anchor and moves into the waves at 6 m/s relative to the shore.  What is the speed of the waves relative to the boat?

c) Calculate the frequency of the waves relative to the boat.

4. A sound wave produced by a clock chime 515 meters away is heard 1.5 seconds after it is played.  The wave has a frequency of 436 Hz.

a) What is the speed of the sound in the air?

b)  What is the wavelength?
