NewPage Port Hawkesbury (NPPH) is a pulp and paper company in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and is responsible for all forest management decisions on Crown and company-owned land managed by the company. To show that NPPH's forest management activities adhere to the principles of sustainable forest management, NPPH committed to achieving certification to various forest management and environmental standards. In 1998, the company was the first forest company in Canada to become registered to the ISO 14001 Environmental Management Standard. In 2001, the company successfully achieved certification to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) and Canada Standards Association (CSA) forest management standards, the first in North America to do so. Recently (February 2008), the company was the first in the Maritime Provinces to successfully achieve certification to the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Maritime Standard for responsible forest management. Additionally, the company successfully achieved certification to the FSC Chain-of-Custody standard and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) Chain-of-Custody standard for the traceability of its wood supply. Port Hawkesbury Operations The Woodlands Unit of the Port Hawkesbury Mill has been in existence since the mill started operations in 1962. It is responsible for supplying wood to the mill and for the management of 630,000 hectares (approximately 1.55 million acres) of Crown and company-owned land in eastern Nova Scotia.
