West Lothian Half Marathon

posted May 23, 2010 10:38 AM by Chris Beamish
They say that good weather brings out the best in you and today that statement rang true for me.  Not knowing what to expect from the Bathgate course I just had to suck it and see on the day.

Now not knowing the detail of a course is generally not a problem but today I found myself in slightly unfamiliar territory at the head of the field.

The race began with a slightly pacy start due mainly to a reasonable runner who I later discovered was part of a relay team. Not surprising that he went off like it was a 5k dash. By mile 2 his exuberance was quashed and I settled into a steady pace with 2 other runners. By Mile 3 I found myself leading the race all be it with a minor lead ( wish I'd read the map now ) At mile 5 the inclines started and the Lothian runner with me had more power and pace on the hilly section and over the next 5 miles managed to open a reasonable gap. Again I found myself with no-one to follow so there was a resulting moment of hesitation where 2 paths intersected. fortunately the correct one was selected (phew)

At mile 12 the race was really on for 2nd place as the runner behind me had made up significant ground but I had worked too hard to let the second place slip from my grasp in the last mile.

Upping my pace I held on to my coveted second place and set a Half Marathon PB in the process.

I'm happy with that. Great day Great event

I do have to say a big respect to all the Lothian and Edinburgh Half Marathoners and Marathoners who ran in the heat today.........can anyone say warm weather training ???
