Exploring Northern China

A travelers' experience

“The temperature is 26 degrees below zero,” broadcasting from the airplane which was about to land on HARBIN, capitol of Hei Long Jiang province in northeast China. I started to get excited for I have never been in this kind of degrees before. When I got out of the plane, I saw the staffs were dressed in wadded jackets, thick hats, thick trousers and thick waterproofing shoes. I laughed because I thought it was not that cold, but as soon as I went out of the airport, the ice-cold wind nearly cut my ears off.

I was there for the cold. The next day, I dressed myself warm and went to the coldest place in the city, the Harbin Ice and Snow World. Believe me, the ice statues were great but it was freezing cold in the yard.

You cannot imagine how beautiful the ice statues are. The transparent artworks kept me staring at them for a long time. I can saw many tiny frozen bubbles inside the lovely icy walls, balusters, floors and slides.

Most of the icy statues had strip lamps inside which covered with glassine in different colors: red, blue, yellow, green ... So the whole yard was full of grandly colorful structures and it is a good choice to visit at night.

After an hour touching and walking on the icy walls and floors, I felt tired and cold. At that moment, I found a beautiful icy gate on which it had two words attracted me, “Hot Drinks”. I rushed in, had a very nice cup of warm milk tea, fantastic!

When enjoying my milk tea, a group of Russian dancers was performing on the icy stage on their ice skates. They were wearing Chinese traditional dress, with Chinese fans in their hands, running, revolving, dancing. They performed gracefully, but for me, a Chinese, I thought they were a little bit funny.

Walked out of the little house, I felt cold again and the next station was the Olympic section. I saw five huge icy statures in different colors from a far distant. When I came near, I found that they were the five mascots of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

What surprised me most was that they were built just as what they look like on the pictures. The statues were huge but at the same time, they were so delicacy. This is the time I started to admire the sculptors.

There were also slides made by ice in the shape of the five Olympic rings. Also, as the theme of the park is Beijing Olympic, there were many other sport items for visitors to take part in, including ice climbing, skating, skiing, golf on ice, football, etc.

I had a very nice time enjoying the icy structures; this is a place that it’s worth going. The park will be closed on March; on one can get in there. All the structures inside the park will unfreeze by themselves when the temperature gets higher and higher. Then the next year, sculptors will create some new icy structures.
